In Thunderbird, Settings > Appearance > Message List > View Style: Table view, one of the default criteria that is displayed is the message subject. The Subject header has padding in front of it, so that if you shrink your message list you end up with | S...| as a subject header. The subjects of the actual messages align to this header as well, and you have the same result. If you increase the width of the message list, the "Subject" appears more centered, but the subject in the messages (which is usually longer than "Subject" is still padded at the front, and you can't see as much of the subject as you ought to be able to. It's a small fix, and I wasn't sure if it should be a support request or an improvement idea.
