Mozilla Connect

I spend alot of time inside Firefox both at work and at home, yet I'm constantly jumping between the browser and a handful of desktop applications. Lightroom. Photoshop. VS Code. Spotify. File Explorer. What if Firefox could bridge that gap? Not by replacing those applications, but by keeping them connected to the same workspace through a lightweight tab overlay that follows you beyond the browser. I've had an idea for Firefox that started from a simple frustration and that is that most of my work happens in the browser, but I still constantly switch between Firefox and many desktop applications. In my case it's Lightroom, Photoshop, Notes, Spotify, grandMA3, File Explorer, Discord, etc I present to you: Firefox Workspace Overlay (App Tabs + Overlay Mode) Credit to @ollenilssonen on instagram for the beautiful fox cub photo Firefox could detect applications that are already running (with explicit user permission) and allow selected apps to appear alongside normal browser tabs. When you click an app tab, Firefox would switch focus to that application. However, instead of disappearing completely, Firefox would leave behind a small always-on-top overlay containing your tab bar. So, while working in Lightroom, Photoshop, VS Code, or another desktop application, you would still have quick access to: Your browser tabs Other application tabs Search/navigation shortcuts A one-click return to Firefox The overlay could be minimal, customizable, and optionally autohide when not in use. The goal isn't to replace the desktop or run applications inside Firefox. It's simply to reduce the friction of constantly moving between browser tabs and desktop applications throughout the day. One thing browsers do well is create a unified workspace. Everything related to a project exists in one place. But as soon as you need a desktop application, that workflow breaks apart and you're back to flipping through windows, taskbars, and Alt+Tab. This feature could connect that gap without requiring applications themselves to change. I've made a concept mockup showing Lightroom running normally while Firefox keeps a small tab overlay available at the top of the screen. The application remains a native desktop app, but navigation between web content and desktop tools becomes much more seamless. I would like Firefox to include a native toolbar auto-hide toggle. The idea is simple: provide a built-in way to hide the browser toolbars automatically, while keeping them easy to reveal by hovering the top of the window. Suggested behavior: - a toolbar button to enable or disable toolbar auto-hide; - a Tools menu entry; - a keyboard shortcut; - automatic restoration of the toolbars on hover; - native fullscreen behavior preserved; - no need for userChrome.css or userChromeJS workarounds. Why this would be useful: - it gives more vertical space to web content; - it is useful on laptops and smaller screens; - it helps users who want a cleaner browsing workspace; - it avoids relying on fragile internal Firefox UI selectors; - it would make an existing power-user customization available in a clean, supported way. I think it would be beneficial for Firefox mobile users, designers and the funding of Mozilla to have a user-created UI design store for Firefox mobile. This means: Users get awesome appearances for their browser (styles, accessibility, fandoms, seasons, ...) Designers can sell their UI design for Firefox mobile Mozilla gets a fair share from the revenue The fair share percentage could be found through a poll on Mozilla Connect. I guess many people would love this personalization of their browsing experience on their phone as they love their ring tones and phone covers. For example, there could be many extraordinary designs for the navigation bar. The AI in sidebar looks good, but it would be really awesome if you add a shortcut for more usability. Clicking by mouse every time to open chat is very uncomfortable and takes long time! Also it would be convenient to open some items from sidebar menu on the left side, whereas AI opened on the right side. Thanks!  ... View more

Just like how we used to be able to select "compact." I understand that more and more people are using vertically oriented devices like phones and tablets, but there is still a huge market share of users on desktop devices, and with the market saturated by widescreen displays, taking up vertical space while having 4 inches of white space on the left and right side of practically every website makes no sense. I switch between Firefox and Opera because I really enjoy the sidebar that Opera has as it makes much more efficient use of screen real estate. ... View more

Firefox desktop has the functionality to have extensions pinned to toolbar for easy access on tabs and homepage. A similar functionality can be implemented in the android version. With the current Firefox android version, there already is an option to add a button to tab bar. Given the limited space on the bar, the choice of extension can be limited to one. Moreover, one needs to open a webpage to change extension value. It would be better if it can be managed/toggled through the homepage through the tab bar button. As an example, one can add a proxy toggle button to tab bar without having to open a webpage and then toggle the extension from the settings menu. ... View more

Hi, I've been using your new Japanese translation feature a lot lately. It's a great, great feature, congratulations on developing this. But, It's annoying that I have to confirm the popup every time I want to enable translation. I don't know why. I mainly translate from one language to my own. The "automatically translate" feature doesn't work for me either; I need to see the original text first. I just need an "on/off" button in the address bar or a shortcut. That's all. Hi! It would be great that the toolbar of the PDF viewer in Firefox were customisable. I would like to be able to decide which features (and their icons) were visible on the bar and which others were collapsed. When using the the chat especially when on either of my laptops. I think it would be useful to be able to minimize/hide the chat but not have it completely close so you can stay in the same session. In my head I see it working by adding a simple minimize button next to the close button. When it minimizes, the icon for the chat can stay highlighted to alert that it is still active. Also, when switching from chat to other options like bookmarks, history or tabs. If there is a current chat open it should use the minimize behavior so the same chat is still active when you navigate back. It'd be helpful to have a new tab button next to the address bar on mobile for easy access. Currently, opening a new tab requires two clicks - one to open the tab window, and another on the "+" button to open the new tab. This also requires interaction with two different parts of the screen that are far apart from each other (top right vs bottom right), which is hard to do one-handed or in a hurry, especially on larger phones.   I'm a heavy tab user, and the option to have a "+" button directly next to the address bar would make it easier to open a new tab quickly. ... Add option to remove the home button (🏠) from the menu bar add functionality to the menu bar (e.g. browser add on menu, history, close browser, specific addon (e.g. screen reader), ...) I would like a vertical option for the Bookmarks Toolbar, similar to how Vertical Tabs are. I know there's an Open Bookmarks button on the sidebar, but it's not the same thing.. I'd prefer to keep my Tabs horizontal at the top of the browser, but have my bookmarks Toolbar go down the side instead. I think it's a better use of screen space, especially on a laptop. ... In earlier versions of Firefox on Android, there used to be a forward button next to the back button when using the extended layout, this has now been replaced with a share button. I would like the option to change this so you can have easier access to both forward and back. I also believe forward is generally going to be a lot more used than share.
