It appears that TB currently runs its automatic message filters only on messages in the Inbox. If a filter needs to be run on the messages in another folder, one has to do so manually.

This is very cumbersome (and quite beats the purpose of an automatic filter), especially in scenarios where there are server-side filters that sort messages into folders or subfolders. Those messages never get processed by TB's filter rules.

It would be great if TB could either

  • run the configured filters automatically on ALL folders, not just the Inbox
  • or allow to mark each filter individually for being run on ALL folders (eg. via an additional checkbox besides "Enabled" in the filter overview pane)
  • or allow to select a folder on which to run the filter in the "Edit/New filter" dialog window (maybe using Inbox as default if none is selected). The logic and data source for that dropdown would be the same as for the "Run selected filter(s) on:" that is already present at the bottom of the filter overview pane.

Thanks for considering this idea - and for the great mail client!

I want to voice my support for this.  I would very much like to run a message filter every 10 minutes on a specific subfolder; it would be great if I could select "All folders" or a specific subfolder in the filter rules.

Yes, that function would be very nice to have!

I'm looking for that too. +1

I'm looking for that exact functionality too. My mail host allows me to filter mail into folders before I check it with Thunderbird. I'm subscribed to a lot of mailing lists, so to keep my Inbox manageable, I filter list mails into the lists folder. When I check mail with thunderbird, I'd like it to then apply my tags to the mails in that folder.

Yes please!!! Very helpful functionality, imho. Thanks in advance 🙂

PS. I have tried to enter "FOLDER" in the properties box under CUSTOMISE (Customise Headers box) and fill across "IS" and "name of folder", but I don't think I've specified what 'folder" means exactly, or haven't entered it in the correct format that TB needs to decipher what it is I'm trying to get it to connect with, if that all kinda makes sense to y'all good folks 🙂

Very important feature to me!

I was trying to figure this out today and came across this thread. On the server side of my IMAP I can automatically sort unimportant mail into folders so that I don't get alerts on my phone constantly, but on my PC (Thunderbird) I can't apply any actions to these messages.

The goal is to automatically archive these messages into a local folder without receiving alerts on my mobile device. I can use message filters in Thunderbird, but there would be a race condition where my phone receives the message before Thunderbird sorts it. It also means my mail won't be sorted if Thunderbird isn't open, so server-side sorting is the only good option I see.

Anyway, that's just a long-winded way to say that I'd also like to see this feature. 🙂

Filters should also work on Spam/Junk folder. Please! 🙏

Thanks @marwer for this necassary function and the other user comments.

I would expand this idea and function. I would like to be able to see in the mailbox folder overview which folders have assigned a mail rule. This could be reached by a minimal symbol like "R" for rule after the folder name.

Folder are important to manage emails and became full control over the mailbox.

I hope my comment is helpfull and together we can support the mozilla developers for the best user experience.
