Using the Alt key to see the menu

Hitting the Alt key every 5 seconds as the menu blinks away, for one reason or another, is making me insane.

Here are two ideas that should be extremely simple to be implemented.

Solution One Highly Preferred: Make the Alt key toggle the menu on and off.  Not just disappear when anything is clicked.  Also make it a simultaneous 2 key press like "2M" etc. to significantly reduce / eliminate invoking the change accidentally.

Or  

Solution Two Less Preferred: Make the menu visible anytime that the cursor is moved to the top, top left, etc.

The current situation is unusable, to the point of finding an alternative.
