Tl;dr: I would love to see Thunderbird (Currently known as K-9 Mail) also being brought to Apple devices.

The term privacy and open source have become well used and something of a reason for many to switch apps/services and even operating systems and devices. But in this day and age on Apple those options are lacking since many are stuck with Apple and having access to a well functioning and well designed e-mail app, with transparent/limited/no data collection from a trusted source is severely lacking since as a user you are basically stuck with the default Mail app, or Canary which seems to be what many recommends (i think because there simply is no better options currently) but in having used K-9 for several years on Android and now that i am currently on Apple i find myself lacking options.

But also with Canary moving to offering a more algorithmic and automated approach (it´s called Copilot and is pro/paid option) in handling of e-mail i think this will create a need for options. Personally even the look of the bottom toolbar is a annoyance since 1 icon is dedicated to the Copilot and no option to remove it. At least i cant find one.

So i hope this idea generates some discussion and for others to chime in on this.

If this suggestion is already somewhere else, or if this should be posted elsewhere then please point me to that place so i can add my vote.

I’d also be happy to pay with TB for iOS (preferably as a one-time payment, not as a subscription)

Thunderbird iOS first please, but consider giving choice to could Vs. stored local, any cloud based system has the opportunity to be hacked. I refuse to use iCloud mail & still use pop & smtp as primary mail services. Where having mail stored local on a device cuts down that risk off a hack. Personally, I NEVER use cloud storage where possible. If I want to sync something I use airdrop or a computer for transfer data & backup purposes.

This must be given serious thought when developing the Thunderbird iOS app.

The bypass of iOS first could be considered slap in the face for Apple users. So please give higher priority to iOS rather than android.  I am really surprised it has taken so long for Mozilla team to make Thunderbird iOS since we have had Firefox iOS forever.

Hello,

Is this still in development? Don't see much of it and this thread dates back to 2022. I have used thunderbird on and off since 2008. But really can't commit due to not having it on my iphone. Your firefox browser app on ios is great, just wish there was a thunderbird option. Apple mail is the default, sure, but there are a large group of people that would prefer to use something else due to some of their design decisions and functionality.

Thanks,

I use Thunderbird on Linux Mint, Mac Mini and now Beta on Android. I also use IOS but of course no Thunderbird. An app for IOS would be very good.

Thanks

Can't wait to use Thunderbird on iOS. This is my main email app on the win and macos, so lack of it on my iOS devices is sad.

Any updates on the development?

I’m exceedingly disappointed to hear that Android has priority. IOS is easier to develop for and doesn’t have security holes the size of the titanic thanks to continued use of JAVA.

I’d love to use Android because it has some great features that iOS is missing, but it’s a security nightmare.

Why don't you activate a crowdfunding campaign to raise additional funds for the development of the iOS application? I believe that many of us would be willing to contribute. As far as I'm concerned, the transition from Android to iOS would be encouraged by the possibility of being able to have Thunderbird on Iphone.

Hey guys,

BETA tester submission here. Any news on release date?

Really looking forward to this.

if I would say anything, the Thunderbird for iOS app should have a few more features than most iOS email applications.

what I would want to see is an ability to share an email to another app, for instance, a notes app. I would also like to see taking an email and turning it into a PDF for instance.

"I would also like to see taking an email and turning it into a PDF for instance."

Turning almost anything into a PDF is already builtin to iOS using the print option.  Just use the print option on an email, while viewing the print window use two fingers and spread them on the first page like you are zooming in.  The document will be converted to a PDF and using the share button, you can now save, share, email the PDF or even save the PDF in a Notes document.  Thunderbird will be able to achieve this same feature of iOS.  BTW, you can use this feature in any app that provide the Print option.

As for sending the actual email in Notes, you can achieve getting the body of the email into Notes by holding your finger down in the body, release your finger, hit Select All, then the Share option in the popup menu and send it to Notes.  Not ideal but will get the email content into Notes.  Hopefully, the iOS Thunderbird will allow Extensions and let us use the excellent ImportExportToolsNG add-on like on my PC.

Hope this helps

@dd

Everything you've said is correct and is a help; if you know that you can do this.

Discoverability is key here. I was wanting a toolbar button that automated this, like Spark for iOS has. It would be good if Thunderbird for iOS appeared in the share sheet icon row, too.

Then a new or uninformed user could know these tasks were possible.
