Oh, brilliant, so I created a new tag and can't do **bleep** about the fact it changes the display colors of everything it's attached to. I've been expecting a certain category of messages to be green but if I start using the new tag as intended (The scope of it would include all messages in the "certain category") it will change the color to blue. I'm not sure what I can do about this other than make separate "color" tags... And my message filters & tags are already a mess because I'm ALSO trying to work around Boolean logic operators (The lack of which is currently the main reason I haven't donated the Thunderbird project recently, FWIW).
I love FOSS, but there's got to be something better around that will still respect my digital freedom.
what happens to you is because Thunderbird sorts the tags alphabetically, according to their creation name. I recommend that you delete the new tag and create it again by inserting a z in front of the creation name, for example: if your tag is called “new”, you should create it as ‘znew’ and then you can rename it to “new” because the important thing is the creation name. This way, it will not be above the previously created tags, unless one of them starts with “z” and the next letter comes before it in the alphabetical order.
What I have been doing, which works also, is the following.
I go to SETTINGS-GENERAL-TAGS. Then I do the following, say I have AMAZON as my first TAG and I want to add AARON. I click NEW under TAGS, then HIGHLIGHT AMAZON. I then TYPE in AARON in the box that appears and click OK, and AARON appears above AMAZON. Works each time. I just found this out by trying different things after I posted my initial question.
You are right, the only problem I see with doing it this way is that it will keep the original creation name (even if you modify it later). If you don't share that email account on multiple computers you won't have a problem but, if the email account is shared, it can be a problem because the tags won't sync if they don't share the same creation name. I'm glad you may have found a solution. Regards.
Great idea. I'd add also Archived status so that all unused are greyed out and pushed to the end of list. Often times, I use tags for labelling of some fixed term tasks (e.g. 'Business Trip 2025/Aug') which are no longer needed for daily use after some time, but still nice to have messages labeled with.
