Adding Built-in Password Protected Feature for Firefox Browser

As a dedicated user and enthusiast of the Firefox browser, I would like to propose an enhancement that I believe would greatly benefit the Firefox user community.

Suggestion

I suggest adding a built-in password protected feature to the Firefox browser that allows users to lock their screens. This feature would require users to authenticate themselves with a password, authenticator app or TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password), or a security key in order to unlock the browser screen and access their browsing session. By implementing such a feature, Firefox can provide an additional layer of security, particularly for users who share their computers or have concerns about unauthorized access to their browsing history and sensitive information.

While I acknowledge the existence of third-party extensions, such as the Browser Lock extension for other browsers, integrating this functionality directly into the Firefox browser would offer a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. It would eliminate the need for users to search for and install separate extensions, ensuring a consistent and secure browsing environment for all Firefox users.

Additional Capabilities

To further enhance the usability and security of this built-in password protected feature, I recommend considering the following capabilities:

1. Multiple Authentication Options: Allow users to choose their preferred method of authentication, including passwords, authenticator apps or TOTP, or security keys. This flexibility will accommodate users' varying security preferences and needs.

2. Customization Options: Provide users with the ability to customize the lock screen, such as selecting a background image or adding a personalized message. This would enable users to further personalize their browsing experience while maintaining security.

Pass lock for using Firefox

One of the best ideas is that due to security issues, it is better to use pass lock in Firefox, in which case it will be used in a personalized purpose.

I see, it looks like an extension to Primary Password. Just want to note that while it adds a bit of protection, it can not stop a half serious attacker. Locking device with OS provided mechanism would always be more secure.

Adding In-Built app lock for Firefox would be great for all categories of OS including PC's that do not have In-built fingerprint reader.

I support this idea.

For Windows users, the key combination WIN + L blocks the entire device from unauthorized access.

Maybe the key combination CTRL + ALT + L based on Windows. 😉

The master password for Firefox could be promoted, which if I am correctly informed also better protects the security of the saved passwords in Firefox from unauthorized third-party programs, so it increases protection anyway.
This master password feature should really be used, especially with a multi-user device.

Master Password for Firefox access ( not only password protection )

Hello, I just learned that the "Master password" only protects the passwords and not the chronic, browser history and bookmarks of Firefox. But these highly private and confidentional informations should be protected from third persons access and view too.  I will explain this.

If I have a desktop PC or laptop in my home environment, people around me can start my PC or laptop. Or, if I have to give my PC or laptop away for repair.

If Firefox is not "master protected" from access and use, these private informations about me, listed in in the chronic, the browser history and the bookmarks are visible. And can even easily be exported !!

So, all people can see:

Which websites had I been on the last months? Were there ones with adult content, political websites, certain stores, I visited, what did I order online?

Which Google searches did I make? Did I look for adult content, did I search for diseases, I might have? Did I look for a loan and so on!

THESE are the informations I want to keep private and confidentional and can compromise me, not my passwords !

So, to have a functionality which protects the complete browser before entering, would be a great help and relief and a high priority feature for the Firefox browser! I can imagine very much people think like me and would be glad to have such privacy protection.

All it needs is to let the "password box" for the Master password stay and block the browser till the password is entered. ( And not, like now, that you can simply click the box away. )

Would be really great if Firefox could add this option.
