I'm personally a heavy tab user but have always wondered why there is almost no support for tab grouping or customization in the native tab bar in Firefox.

I think making it able to group like Google Chrome does for example or at least giving more access for extensions and add-ons would significantly improve the UI in that regard.

I also switched to Chrome simply because it had tab grouping, but if Firefox adds it I would switch back in an instant.

For private use I use multiple accounts (school, shared, personal, etc) and use different groups of tabs for each of them, so I consider it a necessary feature now

Tab groups is a must

I use tab groups in other browsers but I can no longer use Firefox since there is no group functionality. It pains me to say this since Firefox is my main browser at work but I have to switch over to another browser. I hope this is functionality that is added soon so I can return.

Looking forward to this feature! Any news on when it will be available to try out?

It is beginning to look very good! It doesn't yet remain after a restart, particularly impractical on Nightly ๐Ÿ˜›.

When will this feature be released? I haven't been able to switch my browser from Chrome to Firefox for 20 years.

Currently in the nightly channel, tab grouping has improved with version 133 being released in the nightly channel (I didn't find any thread that involves giving feedback on it, so I'll do it here). Unlike the previous nightly release 132, now tab groups can have a name and color set. However, the only thing that is missing is the ability to rename and change the color of an existing tab group. Which I'm assuming is probably being worked on by the development team. Other than that, tab grouping works better than it did in nightly version 132.

Group Tabs by Project or Task with Custom Labels and Colors

For users who juggle multiple projects or tasks, managing browser tabs can become overwhelming. I propose a feature to group tabs into customizable "projects" or "tasks." Each group would have its own label and color, making it easier to visually distinguish and manage related tabs.

Additionally, users could minimize or expand these tab groups, allowing them to focus on only one project at a time. This would be especially useful for developers, researchers, or anyone working on multiple assignments throughout the day.

Having this feature built natively into Firefox would be a productivity booster and reduce the need for third-party extensions.

Does the tab grouping work now? I'm using Nightly 133 and I haven't found this feature at the moment

@wutongtaiwanIt is when you set "browser.tabs.groups.enabled" to true in "about:config".

@wutongtaiwan (and others) also, the team working on this feature is planning to share some updates here on Connect soon ๐Ÿ™Œ

Awesome @Jon  looking forward to the update

I know this is not the right thread ๐Ÿงต but I do have persistent issues with the sync feature. The tabs aren't getting properly captured on desktop and mobile versions (Android). Usually the desktop tabs are showing up inside the mobile app more reliably than the other way around. Can the dev team look into this and fix it? This issue plus the lack of tab groups are the reasons that make me use Brave as my default browser on desktop and mobile.

Update: 10/9/24

It looks like the sync is working much better now (between Android and Desktop) after today's update to 131.0.2. Keeping fingers crossed that it works all the time. Switched over to Firefox as my daily driver with this change.

I really hope the team can deliver the tab groups very quickly and also have the current ai chatbot integreation via Firefox labs work similar to how Brave Leo Ai, Opera Aria Ai or Microsoft Ai work. Currently, the integration is unable to look at an URL and give a summary. I have to block the entire text of the article to achieve that.

Second Update: 10/9/24

Spoken too soon! I made firefox as my default browser on desktop and my android phone after seeing sync happening seamlessly.

I had to restart my phone to allow the google feed to display firefox as my default browser. As soon as my phone restarted with firefox as the default browser, the sync stopped working.

Moving back to Brave. Cannot have a broken sync like this. I use this feature a lot. @Jon - possible to move this to any existing issue?
