Summary:
Enhance the interaction between Firefox Multi-Account Containers and bookmarks by allowing finer control over subdomains, container assignment, and bookmark keyword behaviour.

Problem:
Currently, Firefox allows users to manually open bookmarks in specific containers via the context menu. However, there are several limitations:

  • Container rules apply only to main domains, not subdomains. This forces all subdomains into the same container, reducing flexibility.

  • There is no way to permanently assign (hard-code) a bookmark to always open in a specific container.

  • Bookmarks with identical URLs cannot maintain independent keywords; duplicates inherit or overwrite keyword assignments, limiting workflow customisation.

These constraints make it difficult to manage workflows that rely on separating accounts, environments, or contexts (e.g. work vs personal, multiple logins on the same service).

Proposed Features:

  1. Subdomain-Specific Container Assignment
Allow users to assign containers at the subdomain level (e.g. app.example.com in one container and admin.example.com in another), rather than restricting rules to the root domain.

  2. Bookmark-Level Container Binding
Provide an option to bind a bookmark to a specific container. When opened (via click, keyword, or shortcut), the bookmark should automatically launch in its assigned container without requiring manual selection.

  3. Independent Bookmark Keywords for Identical URLs
Allow multiple bookmarks with the same URL to:

    • Have different names

    • Retain distinct keywords

This would enable users to map different keywords to the same URL but open them in different containers (when combined with feature #2).

Use Case Example:
A user manages multiple accounts on the same platform (e.g. work and personal). They could:

  • Create separate bookmarks for the same URL

  • Assign each bookmark to a different container

  • Use unique keywords (e.g. workmail, personmail) to instantly open the same site in different containers

Expected Benefits:

  • Improved workflow efficiency for power users

  • Better support for multi-account and multi-context browsing

  • Reduced friction when using Firefox Containers as a core productivity tool

Notes:
These features would significantly enhance the usability of Firefox Containers and align bookmark functionality with real-world usage patterns involving subdomains and multiple identities.

I'd also add extending containers to mobile version as well.

Making moves

Firefox Multi-Account Containers currently lack flexibility for advanced workflows. Users can’t assign containers at the subdomain level, force specific bookmarks to always open in a chosen container, or use unique keywords for duplicate bookmarks. This makes it harder to separate work and personal accounts or manage multiple logins efficiently. Enhancing control over containers, bookmarks, and keywords would significantly improve usability and workflow management.

Yes. "Escaping" a container is also difficult. I sometimes want this when opening a link from a containered website (like WhatsApp Web). I'd have to copy the URL and paste it into a blank tab so it opens in its default container.
