Current situation
Firefox Relay is awesome for its seamless integration with Firefox (for both desktop but *also* for Android and iPhone). It's easy to generate aliases and use them. For both mobile and desktop, Firefox is best in class.
Current problem
Self-hosting Firefox Relay is currently difficult and not officially supported. It has heavy dependencies on Mozilla accounts and Amazon SES, which makes it impractical for most users. This means users remain dependent on Mozilla’s servers and infrastructure. If Mozilla ever discontinues the service, changes its privacy policy, or if the mozmail.com domain gets blocked by websites, users could lose access to their aliases or have trouble migrating. It also prevents full control over where emails are processed and stored.
Proposed solution (Official self-hosting support)
Please add official self-hosting support with easy Docker Compose instructions (or a ready-to-use Docker image). This would let users run their own instance on their server or VPS, use their own custom domains, and keep full control over their aliases and data.
Self-hosting as a paid feature?
Mozilla could offer self-hosting as a paid option (e.g official supported Docker images, easier setup, or premium features for self-hosted instances).
That way users who want full control can self-host, while Mozilla still earns revenue from those users.
