There are some videos that support hevc encoding, but it is said that Firefox does not support it at the moment, resulting in lag in video playback, it is recommended to support hevc/h.265 as soon as possible
Thank you for your patience on this. I want to share a head's up on HEVC support on Firefox. The short answer? It's in the works.
The long answer? We are building two lines of HEVC support: (1) HEVC for copyrighted TV shows and films on your favorite streaming platforms (such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, etc.), and (2) HEVC for generic, uncopyrighted video. As of now, we're prioritizing the first line.
At the moment, our plan is to ship this streaming platform line of HEVC as part of our new media pipeline later this half. However, if you'd like to try it out, the support is currently available in our early Beta 129 channel!
Generic HEVC video support is available, but only on our Nightly channel - we will revisit bringing this to our Beta and Release channels once we ship our new pipeline.
Hi @wutongtaiwan--apologies for the delay, I can answer a couple of your questions now and follow up on the third one after checking with my engineers.
HEVC support (for DRM video content only) should be available in Nightly 130. If you are encountering any issues, please file a bug on Bugzilla.com--I'm flagging the issue @earthjasonlin brought up to my engineers and will follow up with a clarification as soon as I can.
We're still evaluating usage of HEVC for non-DRM content--if it becomes compelling enough, we will prioritize it. We have the technical foundation for support, but we have not committed to a specific release at the moment.
