Status: New idea

It's not secret that many people dislike the new changes to the menu and tabs viewer, further there are people who will not be able to use it or severely struggle to use it. By allowing us the option of which we use and see it will allow users to continue using our favorite and preferred android web browser as well as allow those who prefer the older style of menu and tab organization.

Worst UI ever, would rather go back to chrome than use this.

/r/firefox moderators are now actively removing discussions about the UI change.

For shame! I'm almost embarrassed that I helped contribute a few months ago by fixing a small bug in their untested tab manager. There is no saving this interface.

Strollin' around

The new one is truly atrocious and is the only thing keeping me from switching to firefox on Android.

The old one was easy, didn't take a lot of space and everything was just one click away at first glance.

In the new one everything is far away from thumb, it's terribly wasting space with a lot of white space and there are additional menus in the menu(!). Like, what's the purpose of it. You still have to scroll whether it's in a menu or not, it just adds additional click. Unless they're some really niche options, there shouldn't be any additional menu.

Another thing is the illogicalness of why the menu pops up from bottom while the address bar is at the top. Again another unneeded move of finger.

Going on, when all the options are below each other in the same style, they're much easier to find.

Now my eyes have to read a row, then a column, a row and finally another column.

Hope you hear the feedback and do something (hopefully good) about it.

The amount of whining in this thread from grown-ass adults over something so trivial is unreal.

The new menu may not be be perfect, it may need a few refinements, but it's a massive usability improvement over the previous incredibly long wall of text options that looked like it came straight out of Android 3.0.

You people need to learn how to actually write constructive criticism.  There is an art to it.  It will prove far more effective in the long run. (And less personally embarrassing for for you!)

@hackel and you should learn to read the whole discussion, not just the last comments. Many users pointed out the vast detriments of the new UI, but you did not bother to read (which is really embarrassing for you).

"We owe you an apology." - Proceeds to make excuses instead of offering any apology.

This explanation offers nothing. Does anyone actually think these changes were accidental? How would that even work?

Hopefully the supposed upcoming customization allows me to put the menu at the top (for top bar users), align it to the right, remove the horizontal rows of buttons (why would you put that in a vertical element like a menu? It's jarring), and rearrange the options to the order I prefer. Basically, let me recreate something close to the old menu. I don't care if it has rounded corners, I just want it to be functional. The new one isn't.

I'm still running on 147. I'll stay on that until a new version provides a menu that works. Unless it stops working well or becomes to risky to use before that happens; then I'm moving to a new browser.

@Shawon2901 Sorry for the late reply, I've just rebased the demo Tabs drawer against latest nightly.

It's AI-generated with only a light audit so far (goes without being said that it's a pitfall to generate code that one isn't 100% familiar with), but the latest commit is functional and should serve to clearly illustrate the flaws in the design, and how they could save it.

----

All we can do at this point is press for refinement from the UX team on every front we can. I've spoken up in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1979656 regarding the Tabs Tray regression specifically, and I've included a video of the demo tray in action on that report.

Edit: Customization of the 3-dot menu is being tracked at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2066831. It seems they received feedback on that element, at least! This should have been their goal from the start, not to completely redesign the menu from scratch.

Attached is the menu from Firefox Focus. We need to be loud and clear that this is the desired outcome, not the drawer menu!

The redesign is absolutely atrocious and should be reverted.

@andyf , it's been a few months since your response here. Any word on the menu customization options that were promised to us? I've only been hearing silence.

Regarding accessibility, a really important point I haven't seem commented on much, citing from another thread, and partially a response to @hackel and to @OM 's comments

> "Perhaps most significantly... and this is definitely not something I've seen anyone else mention yet... giant redesign changes like this, without opting-in and without warning, that can only be disabled through secret settings that can only be accessed if you know the "secret code," are bad for people's mental health. I have several neurodivergent friends, and they all use Firefox, because it is simply the best browser. On desktop, particularly, it's hugely customizable, and incredibly stable - one guy I know on the autism spectrum has his desktop browser customized to his exact specifications, and there's only been like 1 change in the last 5 years, if not longer, that minutely changed how the browser is laid out. He loves it because change is really hard for him, and enough in his life is difficult enough for him to deal with, so it's very grounding to have his technology be as static as possible, since he uses it as escapism. When his phone updated this morning to have the completely redesigned UI, he was almost apoplectic. I had to quickly go online and figure out how to revert it and walk him through it before he calmed down. And he's still really nervous that this is only a temporary fix and the new UI, which he hates, will be mandatory and rolled out permanently. And after testing it out myself, as mentioned above, I really don't like it, either."

I'm also neurodivergent, and can attest that forced UI changes like can be nerve-wrecking to us to the point of shutting down our capacity to function properly. I urge people who read this and still view complaints or issues as a form of "whining" or exaggerating () to inform themselves about basic questions regarding autism and disabilities, as I'm sure none of you would want to unknowingly act as horrible people by repeating ableist attitudes - or even face criminal charges for commuting ableism at any point in the future.

At any rate, I seriously doubt the team behind Firefox mobile will implement any sort of fallback option. Unfortunately, as with most accessibility needs, dev teams will evaluate the time and effort required to make a product usable for the disabled minority as "low priority" or even "not worth the investment", and move on with that justification. That is especially true for invisible disabilities that are not widely understood and are still regarded by many as "not really a meaningful issue" and/or  "wanting special treatment", as is the case with autism.

Well. I'll keep around for a while and see what can be done, if anything. There's nowhere else to go if Firefox sync is necessary, haven't decided on what to do next yet.
