When navigating a website I frequently need to copy the URL to my clipboard and they quickest way of doing so is to press Ctrl+L, Ctrl+C. When that is copied, I want to defocus the address bar, but the Esc does not defocus and I have to reach for my mouse just to click on the website, breaking my keyboard flow.

bookiebonster, I often press F6 to focus the address bar, copy the URL, and then press F6 again to return focus to the main window afterwards.

F6 cycles through UI elements such as the address bar, any side panel, any notification, and the main window. shift+F6 reverses the cycle direction.

But since I typically do not have a notification or side panel open, then F6 usually just toggles focus between the address bar and the main window.

Would using F6 to defocus the address bar / refocus the main window work for you?
