It is incredulous that Startpage has been around for 22 years - 26 years if including its former name of Ixquick, yet it still is not included in Mozilla search options. I've been using Startpage for at least a decade, if not longer.
I have had Startpage installed on my devices for several years now after learning about it through Firefox. I have never had any problems and I can only be happy about it. I sincerely think that it should be offered at the top of the downloads by Firefox.
SUPERIFFIC IDEA! I VOTE FOR STARTPAGE ON ALL FIREFOX PLATFORMS AS MY DEFAULT, PREFERRED PRIVATE SEARCH ENGINE. I'VE USED IT FOR MANY YEARS AND WILL USE NO OTHER. SHOULD GOOGLE STOP FUNDING MOZILLA, DEFINITELY MAKE STARTPAGE THE DEFAULT SEARCH ENGINE ON ALL PLATFORMS!
In addition, the selection of the default search engine should be available for selection (prompt the user to choose) during installation and/or when FF is started for the first time.
If users choose to install FF, they have already made a choice not to use the “default” browser that came with the operating system. Privacy is one of the main arguments for switching to FF.
Why then does FF follow the same dark pattern of hiding the choice of search engine (which is equally security and privacy relevant) and forcing a default setting on every user who doesn't know they have a choice?
I think money plays a role here, and that's fine. The great people who create FF can't do it all out of a vacuum.
But how about some transparency, right here? Let users know how their choices affect the funding of FF/Mozilla. Give them (another) choice. Let users decide how they want to support the funding of FF.
Google is the defacto search engine people uses, but it isn't an industry standard anymore. Duck Duck Go isn't as trustworthy as we would like it to be. Startpage seems just right for Firefox.
