I have variant-b, both are false. Restart, still the logo is there.

According to your screenshot, you have manually added the preference.
Behind a preference there is a script, no corresponding script, the preference doesn't work.

I did not add them (I don't know how to do that). I searched for variant-b and it showed me those two.
Some other posts mention just "variant" but I don't have that.

Finally unphucked the last update.
Switched to ESR, disabled updates for the time being, added switch "--Allow-Downgrade", but got the the "This profile was last used with a newer version of this application. Please create a new profile." nag popup,
had to edit profiles.ini and installs.ini in the appdata roaming folder to refer to the install prior to upgrade.
This was a PIA.
I moved all our fam systems OFF the global platform and onto ESR to avoid this misdirected and repetitive jerking around the UI of NewTab.
Those that have commented on how these constant efforts to dictate the appearance of the NewTab page without user's ability to intervene will only aggravate users are 100% correct.

compatibility.ini
Allow me this illustration
I launched Firefox esr 140 and Firefox release 141
I opened the profiles of Firefox
I stopped the two versions of Firefox
I deleted the contents of the profile folder Firefox esr 140
I copied the contents of the Firefox release 141 profile folder
I pasted the contents into the Firefox esr 140 profile folder
I launched Firefox esr 140 'Vous avez lancé une ancienne version de Firefox", I chose Quitter and I deleted the compatibility.ini file, and I launched Firefox esr 140
