Status: New idea

After a few days of trying out the vertical tabs with "expand on hover" enabled, I noticed that the time it takes to expand the tabs feels unnaturally long. For one, it's nice that if my mouse accidentally hovers over the sidebar, it doesn't automatically open it, but adding the option in about:config to change the hover time needed to expand the sidebar would help in making the hover time feel slightly more natural!

I have the oppositw feeling, "expand on hover" feels too quick to me - I'd actually prefer the sidebar to stay close when I hover to change tab, and open when I stop for a longer time to search the right tab to click on.

The proposal to add an option to change the time to open could fix both needs.

I agree with @gerlos , for me the delay is too short, and I would love the option to change it.

To piggy-back on this, I would like an option to delay the sidebar’s collapse when not(:hover). When I am trying close a tab and don’t use very precise movements, the sidebar collapses while I am trying to click the Close button. Gimme at least a few milliseconds of grace to maneuver the cursor back aboard the sidebar.

Both the opening and closing delay should be configurable in about:config, with sensible defaults. That would be the best for all users

I struggle often with the tab opening and blocking other content because I passed over it by accident. I would like a longer delay as well - but it being configurable would solve this for all.

I agree that having this configurable would be quite nice. I have the issue that the sidebar blocks content in the page because I accidentally hovered over it (Dev console which is right side vertical, azure dev ops which has a left-side vertical nav)

I agree wholeheartedly that the opening and closing delays should be user configurable.

Hello

Take a look at https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/vertical-tab-expand-on-hover-animations-are-annoyingly-sl...

If you wish to test.

1 - Go to Configuration Editor for Firefox https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/about-config-editor-firefox
2 - Enter a search term sidebar.animation.expand-on-hover.duration-ms

It's not only that the wait time is too long, but it also seems to be buggy. When hovering over it only for a short while, it still opens up even when the cursor is not even is the area of the opened side bar.

After that, it doesn't retract anymore until I slide the curser over it and back away from it.

At this state it's pretty much unusable for me.
The shortcut would be an option but is also painfully slow to open it (also not very accessible on a qwertz keyboard layout)

Is there any news related to this issue ?

From what I see, the sidebar.animation.expand-on-hover.duration-ms parameter (while it's nice to have) is not answering the thread.

Could we have something like sidebar.animation.expand-on-hover.delay-ms to remove the annoying delay before the sidebar start to show up ?
