To use Thunderbird as a Mail Archive.

For now you have to add a mail account then you can create local folders and then you can delete the mail account again.

In my company, a public administration, Thunderbird is installed on about 5,000 workstations and we really appreciate the software. However, we encounter difficulties with many employees who need to manage PEC backups in MBOX format.

Thunderbird has almost everything needed for this mode of use, it's just missing a dedicated graphical interface that guides the user with simple steps.

I am convinced that such a change would make Thunderbird even more complete and user-friendly.

Making moves

@u2t4c6s8n mail box size and thus profile sizes can get out of control after years of Thunderbird use.  A few ideas have been posted for there to be a way to remove old mail out of the active profile but none of them have gained traction here as ideas.

It sure would be nice if something was implemented to manage large email storage. With 5000 installations I can only imagine the amount of mail storage your organization has. If there was a way to move mail to a different location for storage that would also make it accesible by other if needed/wanted. For example, Bob in sales at your company has 3 years of emails but then he quits. John take his position but wants access to Bob's old email to follow up on leads. If Bob's email was "archived" to a different location (on a file server) then Jon could easily access that old mail when he needed to but it would not fill his current profile or mbox storage. Would not that be helpful at your company?

Here are ideas that have asked for something like that, but they have never gained support.
