Thunderbird reconnect after connection has changed

I have constant problem that if I connect to TB and then enable/disable VPN, it stops receiving emails until i restart app. It should reconnect automatically.

Seconded.
The problem is that if Thunderbird loses its connection, it may not even be able to save drafts of messages that are stuck in the send process.  Thus, restarting Thunderbird is not a comfortable option.  One has to manually rescue the content of unsaved messages first.  This discourages e.g. me from trying out if restart fixes a problem with the connection.
