Tl;dr: I would love to see Thunderbird (Currently known as K-9 Mail) also being brought to Apple devices.

The term privacy and open source have become well used and something of a reason for many to switch apps/services and even operating systems and devices. But in this day and age on Apple those options are lacking since many are stuck with Apple and having access to a well functioning and well designed e-mail app, with transparent/limited/no data collection from a trusted source is severely lacking since as a user you are basically stuck with the default Mail app, or Canary which seems to be what many recommends (i think because there simply is no better options currently) but in having used K-9 for several years on Android and now that i am currently on Apple i find myself lacking options.

But also with Canary moving to offering a more algorithmic and automated approach (it´s called Copilot and is pro/paid option) in handling of e-mail i think this will create a need for options. Personally even the look of the bottom toolbar is a annoyance since 1 icon is dedicated to the Copilot and no option to remove it. At least i cant find one.

So i hope this idea generates some discussion and for others to chime in on this.

If this suggestion is already somewhere else, or if this should be posted elsewhere then please point me to that place so i can add my vote.

Hey, Thunderbird Product Manager here! We are beginning to work on an iOS version of Thunderbird this upcoming year (2023). I can't say when it will be ready to be released exactly. But if you follow us on social media (Twitter, Facebook or Mastodon) - we will post an update there when we have nailed down the timeline.

Can't wait for this myself, it's been sadly lacking in development.

I use outlook for iOS. I like this app.

It’s easy to switch accounts. And there are “swipe gestures“ for removing or archiving e-mails. These are good points of it.

I want a “Thunderbird for iOS“ like outlook for iOS. I will use Thunderbird for iOS when it is released!

This is excellent news, it feels like Mozilla as a whole is on a roll at the moment and it’s great to see this community being invited into discussions around other new features for Firefox. 2023 could be a great year for Mozilla and I really hope may provide a turnaround on market share.

Thunderbird on iOS

Hello,

I've recently began using Thunderbird on Windows & Linux & love it!

I'd love to see this wonderful program come to IOS.

That may be possible, since I recently heard that Apple may allow 3rd-party app stores, as part of IOS 17, which will be announced at WWDC, which kicks off on Monday, June 5.

I am an iPad (iOS 12.5.7) user. I would very much like to see support for such older versions.

Is it possible to get a current status of this?
I would very much appreciate this. There is currently not a single universal mail client for iPadOs that checks all the boxes on privacy, encryption and usability.

Do you need beta tester?

This sounds like a great idea.  I haven't yet found a single e-mail client on iOS that can do what Thunderbird does on the desktop; use OAuth 2 with regular IMAP.

Not a common configuration I'll grant you but so far the only solution I've found that allows one to use a "Shared Mailbox" on Microsoft365 business mail, with anything other than Outlook, now that basic authentication has been turned off.  (i.e. IMAP uses the shared mailbox's e-mail address but authenticates using OAuth with the delegate account.)
