Hello everyone,

An option in Thunderbird's settings to automatically close all open tabs when the application is closed.
As a user who works with many messages, calendars, and tasks simultaneously, I often end my day with numerous tabs open. When I restart Thunderbird the next morning, all of these tabs reload. This creates visual clutter and forces me to manually close tabs that are no longer relevant to my current tasks. It slows down my workflow and the application's startup time.
In settings menu, under the "Startup" section, add a new option for exit behavior. For example:
When closing Thunderbird: Save open tabs for next session, or close all tabs

Best regards

TY for submitting, @Giofeff. That would be a helpful enhancement, especially for people juggling a lot of open tabs like you described.

Until we can get something like this added to the roadmap, there's a helpful workaround that might be useful for you to try before logging off for the day:

Right click one of your open tabs in Thunderbird and select "Close Other Tabs". This will quickly close all tabs (other than the one you right-clicked on).  I know it's not perfect, but may be helpful to you. I added a screenshot for illustrationScreenshot 2025-07-17 at 10.53.34 PM.png

MozMike...Thanks so much for the work around, but it would still be nice to have something to just set once.

Thanks for the tip MozMike!!   I still vote to make it a setting you only have to do once.

I strongly support this.  I am trying to support an elderly relative who has had to switch to Thunderbird because his previous client was obsolete.  He gets completely confused by the litter of open messages that build up over a busy session of emailing.  The "Close Other Tabs" workaround would be beyond him; but if I could tell him "Just close Thunderbird down and open it up again", that's something he would understand.

I'm facing the same situation as seglea except I'm trying to help 2 seniors, one who suffers from the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Both find it confusing to find the Inbox obscured by tabs of already read emails when they launch TB. I explain that it's the tab at the top left and they need to close email tabs after viewing them. But they don't. Right-clicking on the Inbox tab and selecting Close Other Tabs is not something that they can do nor remember. I was sure there must be an add-on or setting to launch TB without restoring the previous session (eg: Open previous tabs on/off). I found an old Thunderbird-DontRestoreTabs add-on that looked promising but it's no longer supported.

Having the option to launch TB with no tabs/emails open would be very appreciated.

Thank you for considering this feature request.
