There should be another option in the settings that allows Thunderbird to attempt to close automatically after an update is found.
At the very least, a red icon should appear in the hamburger menu to indicate that an update has been found.
Especially on laptops, this right can run for a long time without Thunderbird ever closing.
Solution:
- Additional option in the updater settings for updates with automatic closing
- For usability reasons, a notification should be sent indicating that a new update has been found, depending on the setting "Ready to install (please close manually)" or (new option) "Thunderbird will close automatically within the next 10 minutes"
