Making moves
Status: In development

Thunderbird can move folders to different hierarchies using drag and drop. However, it is not possible to move them within the same hierarchy, i.e. reorder them.

The "Manually sort folders" add-on had helped to sort folders, but with Thunderbird 115 (Supernova), it is no longer available. It is time to make it a proper feature.

I was involved in the development of the add-on to make it Thunderbird 78 compatible and later as a collaborator. So, as an option, I have considered developing another add-on for Thunderbird 115. This may not be impossible. (John is providing a POC.) But I would like to consider implementing the ability to sort folders properly in Thunderbird.

My current thinking and the work required has been described here.

1846550 - add ability to manually sort (order) folders in folder pane (mozilla.org)

Good news. Now you can try out a nightly build of Thunderbird with the ability to rearrange folders at will.

I proposed it separately.

Unfortunately, however, there do not seem to be many supporters.
In any case, let's talk about it at the place mentioned above.

I'm still in need of a feature we once had called "Manually Sort Folders". I have many e-mail folders, and would like to reorder them manually. It was a nice add-on in prior versions. I await news of the addition of the function called "Manually Sort or Arrange Folders" on page.

Thanks for your work on this feature "Manually Sort Folders"; eager to have it when it becomes available again; I would use it all the time.

@damufo
Thunderbird roughly follows Firefox's ESR release schedule. Firefox 139 is scheduled for release on May 27. So Thunderbird 139 will be released a few days later or the following week.

@JimScherrerThe addon "Manually Sort Folders" (that I'm still using as I am still on version 105) will not be needed after Thunderbird version 139 is released, because then you can simply move/arrange folders with your mouse in the folder pane.
