Thunderbird - add ability to manually sort (order) folders in folder pane

Thunderbird can move folders to different hierarchies using drag and drop. However, it is not possible to move them within the same hierarchy, i.e. reorder them.

The "Manually sort folders" add-on had helped to sort folders, but with Thunderbird 115 (Supernova), it is no longer available. It is time to make it a proper feature.

I was involved in the development of the add-on to make it Thunderbird 78 compatible and later as a collaborator. So, as an option, I have considered developing another add-on for Thunderbird 115. This may not be impossible. (John is providing a POC.) But I would like to consider implementing the ability to sort folders properly in Thunderbird.

SORT FOLDERS

There is no need to explain as user have been asking many times for a sort option for the folders. There have been add-ons that did just that but have been made useless by several updates.
How difficult can it be to implement this feature where so many have asked for so many times.

For few years you can't do such simple feature as manual folders order sorting, which exists in TheBat, for example. Pity...

It is crazy that this isn't implemented. We don't need more fancy new features but the ones that exists to work. This is so maddening. How hard can it be? Will it take years??

This feature request has been ongoing since September of 2023.  It is pretty obvious by now that the Thunderbird team isn't too interested in adding this feature despite the many posts requesting it.  There was a time when we thought it would happen, but it seems that the spark has died.  Very discouraging.

Ever since 115, I've been wrecked by the loss of this ability that was given to us by the add-on.

This does seem like such a basic feature not to have for all of these years. I was so grateful to have the add-on, but now...

So where are we with this incredibly useful, not to say indispensable add-on? Itagaku has been working on it for months and months, so who has the clout to make it happen?

After the TB team finished refactoring around the folders, I submitted another patch on February 14. The earliest it could be merged is TB137. But that is uncertain. They haven't started reviewing it yet. I think it is a low priority for them. There is also a chance that it will be rejected.

I just updated to 137, and the ability to reorganize folders is still not there. I'm still holding out hope that we'll see it soon. I'm unhappy with how things get laid out. Something like this seems like such an essential requirement to allow us to do it our way.
