Thunderbird - add ability to manually sort (order) folders in folder pane

Thunderbird can move folders to different hierarchies using drag and drop. However, it is not possible to move them within the same hierarchy, i.e. reorder them.

The "Manually sort folders" add-on had helped to sort folders, but with Thunderbird 115 (Supernova), it is no longer available. It is time to make it a proper feature.

I was involved in the development of the add-on to make it Thunderbird 78 compatible and later as a collaborator. So, as an option, I have considered developing another add-on for Thunderbird 115. This may not be impossible. (John is providing a POC.) But I would like to consider implementing the ability to sort folders properly in Thunderbird.

Hi everyone!

First, I want to thank @Itagaki for the initial suggestion here, and for the work being done and frequent communication in Bugzilla and elsewhere. As Itagaki mentioned, there is a patch under review and the Thunderbird team certainly wants this to be core functionality.

And we're working on being more transparent and communicative for situations like this. We're a work in progress 😄

Hopefully we'll be able to mark this feature as Delivered soon.

You can experience Mozilla Thunderbird 121 Nightly which has applied my patch. You should be able to drop a folder anywhere in the "All Folders" view of the folder pane. 😉

No, selecting a specific folder at startup is a separate feature. I think this could be done with add-ons in the future. But you can submit it here as a separate new idea.

Add me to the list of - Mozilla, this feature is way overdue in Thunderbird. I did not see any comments not requesting the feature. Itagaki has shown it is loved and doable. Why wait?
