Thunderbird right now / Missing Features
I have added some calendars with "New subscription from link (read only)" to my Nextcloud. These external calendars are currently not synchronized when setting up the synchronization with Nextcloud Calendars. I only get the option to synchronize my own internal calendars. Right now, you need to retrieve the links of the calendars elsewhere, for example in the DavX5 and ICSX5 app on Android and then type the URL in Thunderbird, which is not very convenient.

A possible solution / Functionality of the Android apps
On Android, when synchronizing Nextcloud calendars, you use DavX5. There you get the option to sync external read-only calendars with ICSX5, which is very nice. Since Thunderbird can sync the links natively, it doesn't need an extra application. I would guess this makes the implementation of such a functionality easier than for the Android app developers. It would be very nice to have this option to also synchronize the external calendars directly.

Conclusion:
Please implement an easy option for subscribing to external / link / read-only calendars from Nextcloud directly in Thunderbird.

Advanced:
Another feature would be a subscribe menu for Nextcloud where you can choose the calendars (and maybe the address books) you want to synchronize similar to the menu for the e-mail folders to synchronize.

Alternative:
If I'm not wrong, the old TbSync addon had all these functionalities, which is sadly not supported any more. Maybe the developers find something useful it the code of TbSync.

I just noticed that what I want is exactly what is already possible for Google accounts.

For Google calendar it doesn't matter if the calendars are yours or if they are just a subscription. You can simply click "New Calendar...", select "On the Network" and type in your Gmail as username and then press "Find Calendars". Without entering any password again, you get a view of all calendars (your own and external ones) that you can subscribe. You can click the checkboxes and subscribe and unsubscribe from calendars.

For Nextcloud, I wished it was the same. Right now, you just type in your username and the URL of the Nextcloud server and click "Find Calendars". Until this step it is the same easy process. But then it changes:

  • You need to enter a password next, even if it is already saved in the Password Manager.
    Google: no password
  • Then you get a similar view of the calendars like for your Google account. But external calendars are missing.
Google: external calendars are show and can be subscribed to
  • You can only select calendars that you haven't subscribed to. Calendars, to which you are already subscribed, are greyed out and cannot be unselected.
Google: every calendar in the list has a working checkbox, so you can select which calendars to subscribe and unsubscribe.

So, I would like the functionality for the Nextcloud calendar to be similar to that of Google Calendar:

  1. No unnecessary password requests if the password is already saved
  2. External calendars with just a link
  3. Be able to unsubscribe from the "Create New Calendar"-View
