Support WebAuthn Passkeys

Firefox supports WebAuthn, but as far as I could tell only with hardware tokens. I could not find a word about Firefoxs support of Passkeys (like Apple announced recently) anywhere

Personally I don't know why passkeys werent adopted much sooner, it seems such a long hanging fruit to just store the key in the FF password manager.

I use FF to support a web where there is not only one option, like Chrome, but FF keeps falling behind and behind instead of being at the forefront. This should be a top priority.

Lack of passkeys is super super frustrating - it's the only missing feature that is forcing me off Firefox.

FF 119 is not supporting Amazon passkey on Win 11 desktop.  As with other site launch issues (streaming with Dish Anywhere, et al), Chrome already supports this.  Android FF does not support Dashlane as the passkey repository, offering only NFC or USB hardware passkey.  Please advise.

I'm not sure which passkey you're talking about (there's several aspects of passkeys right? I'm not that savvy in the topic) but for me on Mac OS, FF 119 (120 beta), passkeys (Yubikey 5C NFC) work in several places like Bitwarden or Google.

The demo at https://www.passkeys.io/ still doesn't quite work on FF 120.0b6: after clicking on "create a passkey" I get a pop-up instructing me to "Touch your security key to continue with www.passkeys.io.". I assume that this is referring to Touch ID (I'm running FF on an M2 MacBook Air), but it has no effect. My only option is to click "Cancel", thus aborting the process.

@ggm00 The fact that you cannot login with passkey on Amazon with Firefox is because Amazon has designed their site so it does not show the option to Firefox users (other sites which hasn't excluded Firefox work fine). So you gotta talk to Amazon about that.

Chrome on MacOS supports storing passkeys in a local profile, which I use for Duo Push 2FA. This is better than using iCloud Keychain, because the iCloud popup is very slow, which makes a frustrating difference when you have to use it multiple times per hour. This is the only restriction preventing me from fully switching over to Firefox.

What's the expected timeline for cross-device passkey support (i.e a QR code that lets you use a passkey on desktop with your phone)?

I'd also love something similar to Chrome's QR code passkey solution! It would also make using passkeys semi-usable in linux for the time being

I'm surprised to see that passkeys at v119.0.1 are finally working! I can login by scanning a QRCode (this was implemented a few updates ago) and now by notification on my phone! Too bad that apparently Windows 11 is broken and it can't save the passkey... (tried on Edge and got exactly the same error)

I don't know who's responsive for what, but since a few weeks ago I was able to login by scanning the Qr Code with my phone, and now at v119.0.1 my phone was added to Windows Hello and I receive a notification to login (and confirm by using fingerprint), too bad that apparently W11 is broken and can't save the passkey (Edge gives the same error).

Tho my tests are limited to Passkeys.io and Authentik.

On Windows i can login via scanning a QR-Code and use the passkey from my phone, will this also come to Firefox for macOS?

Support for Passkeys is a top priority for us, and the team is actively working on it. However, due to some stability issues, we have decided to spend more time on testing and postpone its release. The next planned target for enabling Passkeys is Firefox 122.
