Status: New idea

When we have many tabs opened, it's possible the same url has been duplicated in our tabs.

We would like to close Duplicate open tabs by right clicking any tab and selecting Close Multiple Tabs > a new "Close Duplicate Open Tabs" option which would leave only one instance of the URL open in the browser.

Looks there's a workaround, as duplicated tabs would be surely opened as usual order (so on the right of the original one) you can right-click on the tab that precedes them all and click Close tabs on the right on Close more tabs. If after or between them there are tabs that you don't want to close just drag them to the left of the tab that precedes the tabs that you want to close.

Since we have containers this might not be a good idea because the same url can be open in multiple containers.

Hi @Luca_Pavan while browsing a topic on shopping, forums, and Q&A websites, I open multiple tabs and keep them open without immediately browsing. Occassionally the links might be a page previously opened in another tab. So the tabs are not in order like when intentionally duplicated using the Right click Duplicate > Tab option.

Perhaps, @Anonymous although when the tab is duplicated in the current container it should be possible to close only the duplicated tab for the current container by selecting a child context menu option. Duplicates can be easily identified while iterating over the url list for each container.

e.g. Right click Close Duplicated Tabs >

  • Close All Duplicated tabs
  • Close Duplicated tabs in current container

Similar to the current Close Multiple Tabs context menu

@FastBrowser2022

I am currently  working on an addon, which should help with what you describe and hopefully many other usecases. It is still "work in progress",  but if you are interested, you can take a look here:  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/select-tabs-advanced/  (might still be pending review on AMO but should become available in a few hours)

If you decide to try it out, feel free to report bugs and enhacement suggestions on the Support Site.

Have a nice day.

@AnonymousThank you, I may review it when it is not in a experimental stage.

Making moves

There's a tab manager extension that has a Close Duplicates button:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/grasshopper-urls/

Even better, if it could highlight or indicate that a tab is a dupe, I'd be happy to close it myself.

Could also have a tooltip so when you hover over a link that's already open, it could say "Link already opened in another tab - switch to it now?" or something.
