restore ability to click thru to search engine in firefox search box

Previously when I opened the dropdown menu in the firefox search box I was able to click an icon for one of the sites I had saved there (e.g. wikipedia) and go directly to that site. Now this functionality has been removed for some reason. Clicking the icons has no effect without characters (e.g. a space) in the box.

While linking to these pages is not explicitly the purpose of the dropdown, it was a simple way to get to things I had already saved in one part of firefox without having to also bookmark them or make extra keystrokes. Now it's just slightly more effort than before for no apparent benefit.

This was a unique feature that gave me quick access to major site's homepage, without giving up space to an unsightly bookmarks toolbar. There have been some previous discussions about pressing enter, and the same is true here.

I came here for the same thing. I was stumped when I couldn't click the icon to visit the site after the last update. Thought this was a bug and came here to give a heads-up. I don't know why you'd remove the ability to do that. I use that everyday.

I also made great use of this -- I added sites (such as Google Maps) I used regularly into the search bar, but I don't always want to search those sites. Doubling this as a sort of quick bookmark for sites I use regularly saves space and improves useability.

does someone know which version of FF I need to downgrade back to, to restore this feature?

I agree wholeheartedly. This was suddenly changed, with no benefit to and an extra effort for the user!

Why?

I use this functionality daily, and it is an extra effort when you have arthritis. Previously, I could just use the mouse to click on my selected search icon without having to reach the keyboard and input a character into the search box.

I can see absolutely no reason for this change. It's very frustrating.
