Make it easier to hide the share button in the address bar in Firefox on Android. Together with reader mode and the translate button (if available) there is almost no space left for the address itself. Moving all three buttons to the menu (or at least the share button) would help a lot.

Agreed, those buttons are of the past. I often click them accidentally.

A clean interface is a better interface.

It's ridiculous that there isn't already a built-in setting allowing users to turn these buttons off in the first place. The address bar is for the url, reading button, tabs, and menu. I don't need a share button that I've never once used in my life. And just in general, I thought the whole thing with firefox was customization. Why change that?

URL + tabs button + kebab menu would be enough for me.

The translate button is also insulting. Because I am native french there is absolutely no way I would not want to use automated translations? there is no way to say that I can actually find my way around English, thank you very much and leave me alone now.

I don't know how you do user research but something at Firefox is clearly broken.

If you end up visiting a phishing website, graphically identical to the legit counterpart, you don't realize it because the address bar is completely covered by the share and the translate button.

This is absolutely crazy. I hope they revert these changes back.

i was going to argue that the Share button should not be in the address bar — the space for webpage-specific info and actions — because it works on every website. but then i realized that Share doesn't work on offline documents opened in Firefox, since Firefox attempts to send its converted filepath instead of the actual file.

if they fix that, the share button will work in every context, so it may be removed from the address bar since it's used too rarely to justify taking up such a prominent space.

please make the Share button send the actual file when used on an offline document, so it will be an action that works in every context, so you can remove it from the address bar.

Please remove the share button for the address bar. completely redundant when I can copy/paste the address. add it to the menu if you must add it, I don't need it in my face constantly.

An option to customize URL bar would be great. Moving/removing buttons and maybe using double bars? Let users choose which buttons are visible and goes where

The URL bar is becoming tool cluttered, which now severely degrades usability. It was a bad choice to add the share button here. A common way for users to navigate to new sites is to activate the URL bar and type in a new URL.

The primary function of the URL bar is navigation, as users often tap it to type in a new address. With the current layout (particularly on smaller screens and one-handed use), this action risks accidentally activating the reader mode (most commonly the reader button because it is next to the url). The main reason the reader mode is so close to the URL is that there are other unnecessary elements in the same URL bar (translate and share buttons).

Look at this! Only a few letters of the URL are visible, and the space to activate the URL editing (most common action after accessing the tab menu) is practically out of reach. As pointed out by some other users, hiding the url from the user is also a security risk.

Recommendations:

  1. Remove the share button: Sharing can still be done by copying the URL from the URL bar, or from share buttons elsewhere (e.g., menu). There no justification for placing it here.
  2. Add options to disable at least the reader mode. And also the share button, if it is not removed.  But in my opinion, there is no reason not to remove the share button.

Other notions:

  • Home button - I never use it. When I want to return to the home screen, I just open a new tab (which is already easy to do in the UI). But the home screen button is out of reach of my thumb so it does not really matter that it is here.
  • Lock icon and horizontal spacing of the elements. Maybe these spaces and the lock icon could be made smaller to save space?
  • On mobile, itis also critical to design for one-handed use. The right bottom corner of the screen is the most important space, as it is the area that the user's thumb can easily reach. This space should be reserved for essential and frequently used actions. Using this space to force secondary or rarely used functions (like Share and Reader mode) reduces overall usability.

until 2 days ago, i used to believe putting the Translate button there was good because it would only appear for some websites for which the Translate function is available, but now i know Translate works on every website.

only the Reader button should be in this spot. the Translate and Share buttons being there too really messes with my mental model that this spot is for functions that work on the current website, that don't work on every website.
