My copy of Thunderbird is protected by a Master password, which ensures that you enter your password before Thunderbird launches.   However if you "CANCEL" at that point and do not enter your password Thunderbird STILL launches and existing e-mails can still be read.  If you try and send an e-mail the password will be required, but existing e-mails can still be read without entering the password.  This seems bizarre.
It would be better if Thunderbird doesn't launch at all if you press "CANCEL" at the password stage.  Thank you

Same here, its possible to access the Mail Folders and read them without entering the password at all. Just "X" The master-pw request and keep going.

Same here, 128.8.1esr.
Nothing should open, if the correct password isn't entered.
I get full access to all Mails simply by clicking Cancel 4 times.
The password field pops up again and again but I can still read all emails.
This is not how password protection should work !!!!

Come on! This function is useless in the current implementation. Do it properly!

And I thought it was just me...! If I click Thunderbird by mistake, simply hitting "cancel" when the password box appears does not work. Repeated pressing of cancel simply loops round again, although after a while my Yahoo connection also joins the fun.

When will "cancel" actually get to mean what it says?

  • "Your primary password protects your saved passwords, but it does not prevent others from seeing your messages in Thunderbird"

So how can I do that? I mean prevent others from seeing my message in Thunderbird? Please reply.

As the title says, if you have many accounts on your desktop Thunderbird (at least Windows, but I suspect other systems to be equal), once you have the primary password set, it'll ask you to fill it once you start Thunderbird.

But if you opened it by mistake and click "cancel", you get prompted again and again.

I'm not entirely sure this is the best place to raise this, but I found nowhere else.

You get many prompts for primary password?

Or for account password?

For the primary password, but only if you keep clicking `cancel`. IIRC, pressing the "Close" button (X on the top right) does the same, but I'd have to confirm.

Close is the same as Cancel

Mail account passwords, and the Thunderbird primary password, are not designed to block access to messages already stored in Thunderbird. See also https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/protect-your-thunderbird-passwords-primary-password

What you asking for is https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/primary-password-was-master-password-to-block-access-to/idi-p/2....  I'll merge this to that idea.
