From the previous post on Crowdicity:

I would like to see vertical tabs baked in. MS Edge now has it out of the box!

I currently use addons for this - but there's no way to disable the top tab bar, which duplicates the tabs and takes up space.

Vertical tabs (with top bar disabled) would free up more space for web content, which is (usually) vertical. Most screens are widescreen (RIP ThinkPad 4:3 ratios), so the less browser UI at the top/bottom, the more content we can view.

Still frustrated that Edge is so appealing for this reason alone.

To answer a more recent question from devs: tab grouping is just a nice-to-have. Please don't hold up basic implementation of vertical tabs just for that.

There shouldn't be much to evaluate and study here. Most folks have been asking for Firefox to simply do what Edge does.

+1. I switched away from Firefox because I can't get vertical tabs to work well, but I'm missing the browser so much. I really hope this goes somewhere

Same here, mostly Edge and Brave. But hoping this feature come soon to this great browser.

This is the only reason why I still use Edge, particularly for work. Vertical tabs are just a boon for my productivity!

Tabs are a very sensitive topic when we take security in consideration. There should be no API exposed to hide or remove tabs. Making tabs configurable would be a really really bad idea. I know a lot of people have worked on their own implementations of vertical tabs on the side panel, and honestly, they do a great job. But exposing the any api, even cosmetic in nature, would be a nightmare. If this feature ever gets implemented, it should be definitely a completely baked in feature. Maybe expose a couple of API like change background image or stuff on the sidebar.

I too would love to see a built-in implementation of a virtual tabs kinda like what Microsoft Edge has. Currently, there's a limit of the maximum number of tabs Firefox's horizontal tab bar can support before it overflows and pushes the maximize, minimize, close and opened tabs buttons out of the way. A native built-in implementation of a virtual tabs sidebar would solve this problem especially if the horizontal tab bar is removed.

Furthermore, I'd love to also see Firefox's built-in virtual tabs have the option to enable a tree-style tab type organization similar to what's found in the Tree Style Tab extension which I'm currently using.

Every time Firefox updates, it breaks the CSS style I'm using to get vertical tabs, and then I have to wait for the dev to update the code, or ask people for people on r/FirefoxCSS. It's really getting tedious. Please implement this feature natively. Or allow us an option to merge the menu and URL bars into one so we don't need to rely on CSS for that.

I really want to support open source and all but the frustration that comes from what @Chlam said is so high that I'm considering to switch to Edge or really any other Chromium based browser cause it's just laughable how this is still not a thing even though the demand seems to actually be there, especially when seeing that Chromium based browsers have almost all added it by now!

@Folas1337I think there's a thread already open for that in bugzilla. I'll see if I can help with it today since the UI is based on JS and CSS anyways.

Once a while I check whether I can finally use Firefox: I look for "Firefox vertical tabs" and whether there is anything that at least resembles what Edge has. I then see the "use add-ons" answers and forget about Firefox for the next couple of months. Bummer

I created an account here just to please ask for this. I don't know how long can it be until we get an update or something. It can't be possible that firefox is getting so much behind with respect with any other browsers.

It's not a major showstopper for my organization. But I will say that it is pushing back a more mass deployment of Firefox. I'm eagerly waiting for the approval and deployment of this feature.

Doesn't need to be identical to Microsoft's browser (shoddy implementation of all of its features to be honest) just better than that crappy Tree Styled Tabs extension (that thing needs some serious UX refactoring and better I/O responsiveness) or the way Floorp does it (Firefox fork. Used to be better but they wrecked it to focus on a useless toolbar that wraps history and bookmark management into the sidebar uselessly). Hopefully a native vertical tabs would also turn off the tab bar, which become redundant and is pretty useless as is (except for the all-tabs button, which thanks for adding as its awesome)
