Native Tab Grouping / More Customizable Tab bar

I'm personally a heavy tab user but have always wondered why there is almost no support for tab grouping or customization in the native tab bar in Firefox.

I think making it able to group like Google Chrome does for example or at least giving more access for extensions and add-ons would significantly improve the UI in that regard.

So, after now 1,5 years since this thread was created, still nothing happened here.
No reaction from the development team. Why is this feature and all the users who want it just ignored? This should be top priority! What a shame...
The lack of tab grouping is so regressive and the biggest obstacle to working productively with Firefox. You are practically forced to use another browser if you don't want to suffocate in Firefox with 3 windows and hundreds of tabs, since ALL the others have tab-grouping.

Unfortunately, it's not even "In development" and I can only agree with you. Firefox is slowly crashing and does nothing to show that it's still fighting to stay alive.

This is a bit far-fetched, but with Tree Style Tabs, and Tab Grouping, and Bookmarks, the meaningful distinction between bookmarks and tabs does get blurry. I think it will make sense to slowly erode this distinction, and instead create additional ways to organize and represent tab stacks/trees/groups.

Maybe in the farther future something like a graph view (a la Cotoami/Obsidian/etc.) where we can organize pages, ideas, and notes in something akin to a mix of social bookmarking, appflowy/notion notes-ish wiki, or inspiration/interest boards with optional integration with some sort of social media platform *cough cough* Pocket *cough*

Grouping of tabs with names and predefined colors

I would suggest adding the functionality of grouping tabs and then defining a name for the group and a color. This function will allow better management of tabs of the same group and minimize the use of space on the screen.

@kxra I find your ideas interesting. It reminds me of when I thought "why can't browsers also act like file explorers?" As they are also able to open certain types of files, like video and image files. 

The examples with sidebars remind me of the arc browser, which is a pretty new browser that I haven't tried out yet, but conceptually I dig their idea of how they store tabs. 

Although for now I still think it's important to have a distincion between bookmarks and opened tabs as it would be a pretty big change conceptually to change it with how used everyone is to it currently. 
And I also still think it would be a fun idea to be able to open bookmark groups as tab groups and the other way around, store tab groups as a bookmark folder with all the tabs inside of it.

Tab islands like Opera browser

Check out the tab Islands in Opera browser.

They are groups of tabs, very convenient! And this is the reason why I am moving from firefox to Opera.

Consider adding them to Firefox, they 're really nice!

This is definitely done better in Chrome: you have unified search and visual diversity, instead of hiding the tabs and having no system search over them.

Just another user giving my opinion that is a seriously needed feature. Like others, I am considering switching back to chrome/edge because of this missing functionality.

Whilst it's been said so many times, here are my reasons why I use tab groups:
- during projects when you have documentation open, you can conveniently group different sections. this is critical for things like electronics where you may have datasheets for different parts, alongside software documentation, etc. it's a great way to organise
- separate groups for social networks, email, youtube etc. would be fantastic with containers!
- I use tab groups as a simple 'read later' where i can store articles I want to read


Tab groups makes REALLY good sense with Firefox containers!!


I would suggest the dev team please just observe how many people want this feature!!! It's been so long... can we at least get an answer as to whether this will ever be implemented?

Agreed @averageUser , at least tell us why it WOULDN'T or COULDN'T be implemented if that was the case.
If for some reason (I'm not a dev) they would need to do big rewrites of the base code or rewrite it from the ground up, I would totally understand them taking ages to do so or being hesitant on it. But without that information, I can only assume things and look at the data available, which is "them not doing it and ignoring this request".

I dislike the fact that we have to praise the CMs pressence as something good which is just such a shortcoming and yet I feel terrible because he's the "name(face)" we have here reading/to deal with. And I don't think he has anything to do with development other than data input.

Group tabbing is 100% necessary. I hope this pass as soon as possible.
