Status: New idea

Firstly, I do know and use the extension "Minimize on close".. and the "hide when minimised" tick box.

Yet I wonder why this still isn't a native feature in a programme that is clearly designed to always run in the background anyway..  At least since calendar and reminders are now baked into it, it just makes no sense to close the app completely and not receive these alarms.

Relying on 3rd party apps that sometimes just break after major updates is not great in this case, and make me reluctant to update (cause you never know what's gonna break).

I find this "always running" behaviour annoying with most types of software like Zoom/Skype/etc., especially if you cannot turn it off.
However, for Thunderbird: please make this a native feature, but leave users the option to turn it on or off.

Cheers

Just found out about this add-on:

https://services.addons.thunderbird.net/eN-US/thunderbird/addon/close-to-tray/?src=cb-dl-created

Thanks to the creator @Lachcim!

However, the main issue remains: with any update to TB, this might stop working again...

Hi @justanotheruser , just saw your comment!

Regarding "with any update to TB, this might stop working again":

1. I've changed the maximum supported version settings to make Close to Tray compatible with ALL future versions of Thunderbird. This means that as new versions of Thunderbird are released, Close to Tray won't artificially be marked as "unsupported".

2. I'm committed to maintaining Close to Tray. Should it actually become incompatible with a future version of Thunderbird, I'll be happy to release a fix. Close to Tray is also open source, so anyone can contribute.

3. From what I've seen, the Mozilla people like to work with developers to make sure that large extensions don't become obsolete. Close to Tray is at five thousand users now and growing. I expect to get a nudge from Mozilla should I fail to notice an issue in due time.

I'm glad you found my extension useful! Happy to be of service!
