Status: New idea

Hi Thunderbird team,

First of all — thank you for building and maintaining such a great email client. Thunderbird is my go-to recommendation whenever someone asks for a free, privacy-respecting, cross-platform alternative to Outlook.

However, I've recently helped several colleagues migrate from Outlook to Thunderbird, and every single time we hit the same wall: there is no straightforward way to import .pst files without having Outlook installed on the same machine.

The current workflow looks something like this:

1. Install a third-party tool (eM Client, PST Walker, etc.) to convert .pst → .mbox

2. Install the ImportExportTools NG add-on in Thunderbird

3. Import the .mbox files manually

For a technically skilled user, this is manageable. For an average office worker switching from Outlook? It's a dealbreaker. Many of them simply give up and stay with Outlook — not because Thunderbird is worse, but because the migration path is too complicated.

What I'd love to see is a built-in PST Import Wizard that:

- Accepts .pst files directly (no Outlook installation required)

- Preserves folder structure, attachments, contacts, and calendar entries

- Works as a simple one-click experience within Thunderbird's existing import flow

Libraries like libpst (open-source, used in Linux tools like readpst) already handle PST parsing reliably. Integrating similar functionality into Thunderbird's core could remove the single biggest barrier to Outlook-to-Thunderbird migration.

With Microsoft pushing users toward cloud-only subscriptions, more people than ever are looking for alternatives. A seamless PST import could be Thunderbird's strongest migration feature and, frankly, its best marketing tool.

Thank you for considering this. Keep up the amazing work!

I agree with this feature request. Thunderbird is a strong alternative to Outlook, but PST import is still a major barrier for users who want to switch without keeping Outlook installed. A built-in PST Import Wizard would definitely make Thunderbird migration much easier for non-technical users.

Until Thunderbird adds native PST support, the most practical method is to convert PST files into MBOX format first, because MBOX works well with Thunderbird and other open email clients.

For this, Softaken PST to MBOX Converter can be a useful workaround. It works as a standalone application, so Microsoft Outlook installation is not required. The tool converts Outlook PST files to MBOX while preserving folder hierarchy, attachments, email formatting, and important mail properties like To, CC, BCC, From, Date, and Subject.

It also supports large PST files, batch migration through folder mode, preview before conversion, password-protected PST files, and non-English characters such as Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. Once the PST file is converted into MBOX, it can be imported into Thunderbird using ImportExportTools NG.

This is not as simple as a native Thunderbird PST Import Wizard, but for users who need to import PST to Thunderbird without Outlook right now, PST to MBOX conversion is the cleanest practical route.

Making moves

I completely agree that importing PST files is one of the biggest pain points for users moving from Outlook to Thunderbird. Many people don't even have Outlook installed anymore, so the current migration process becomes much more difficult than it should be.

Until Thunderbird adds native PST support, users usually have to rely on third-party tools to convert or import PST files. I've had a good experience with Advik PST to MBOX Converter because it can convert PST files to MBOX while preserving the original folder structure and attachments. After that, the MBOX file can be imported into Thunderbird using its import feature. It saves a lot of manual work compared to trying multiple conversion tools.

A built-in PST import wizard would definitely make Thunderbird more attractive for Outlook users and remove one of the biggest barriers to switching. Hopefully the Thunderbird team considers adding this feature in a future release.

I've seen the same issue while helping people move from Outlook to Thunderbird. The biggest obstacle isn't Thunderbird itself—it's getting the data out of a PST file when Outlook isn't available. At the moment, there isn't a direct way to import PST files into Thunderbird, so users have to convert them first. One solution I've used is *Advik PST to MBOX Converter* , which exports PST files to MBOX while keeping folders and attachments intact. Once the MBOX file is created, importing it into Thunderbird is much more straightforward. That said, having a native PST import option inside Thunderbird would be a huge improvement. It would make migration much easier for non-technical users and encourage more people to switch from Outlook without relying on additional software.
