Delayed attachments

One of the templates I use always needs the same document attached - but that document need to be edited every time before it's sent. I can imagine this is a scenario that pops up in a lot of business settings.

It would be nice to be able to have "virtual" attachments to templates, where only the file's location is saved in the template and the actual file is only attached when the template is instantiated, so it is always the latest version.

Alternative approaches might be:
 - a (global?) setting for attachments to only be picked up at send time
 - the possiblity to open/edit attached files from within the mail being composed (i.e. save to tmp, edit, reattach on close)
