Better accessible tab (un)mute controls

The changes, brought along with the Proton redesign, have made it less obvious to mute or unmute a playing tab, something you want to do quickly and without confusion.

Before, a simple but effective speaker icon was visible and could be accessed at all times. Now, the icon (dis)appears on hovering. The small capital text hasn't helped me once (too small to read, wants to convey too much information).

So I'd like to suggest using (larger) icons with a larger click area again, for _relevant_ volume/autoplay/PiP tab controls, and abandon too much text for more clarity.

Oh man, I have accidentally muted tabs way too often since this update. Please make it better!

I would agree - the entire tab bar UI was infinitely better pre Proton.... IMHO this whole part of the UI needs to be reverted e.g. to the look that worked so much better in 78ESR (the previous ESR before 91). Shame the design team have already rejected a bunch of suggestions on the old ideas platform.

I was looking for a way to remove the mute button which appears on hover. I keep accidentally muting my tabs, when I just want to switch there. Please make it possible to hide the mute button. I'll use context menu if I really want to mute a tab.

Set the ability to stop the sound in tab window regardless of whether there is a sound on the page or not

I was wondering if you guys could implement a per tab / per window mute button.  It can be rather irritating when you are listening to on-line radio in one window while browsing in another, and that other window starts playing audio content that steps all over the desired music.  It would be greatly desired to have an ability to mute other tabs/windows so that the one could be the sole source of audio content.  I've looked through what controls are available from the Firefox menu, but don't find any such control.  Thanks!

You're right, I don't think this is built-in anywhere.

For now, you could consider:

There are a few different add-ons for automatically muting tabs, with different features and controls. One that might be helpful lets you see tabs playing audio across Firefox and mute them from one panel: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/sound-control/.

If you right click on a tab you have mute tab (when there is audio coming from).

As I can understand you want that switch the audio to the tab you are viewieng and mute the others.

A speaker symbol in the menubar. Like the cut or copy button. The activated tab is muted if a user press the speaker symbol. Maybe mouse wheel volume up/down over the symbol.

I'd like to see the option of keeping certain tabs muted, every time I go to that site or it opens from an email link. I'm tired of certain websites blasting me out of my office chair when their page opens.
