Right now, Thunderbird remembers the state (expanded or collapsed) of email account folder on the left pane. Allow an option to always start Thunderbird with them in collapsed state.
Good idea. I would also make it user configurable for variety of use cases:
1. Multiple Mailboxes (all important) There is clear benefit to start Thunderbird will all mailboxes collapsed as this gives better overall view of new messages in each mailbox without going into details. Also increases focus and preferred on small screens (laptops).
2. Single Mailbox. In this case I would like to start with Mailbox expanded simply to save a mouse click.
3. One Important Mailbox (monitored) + several (non-monitored) mailboxes, or Local Folders. This use case is the most likely scenario for majority of people. This allows to focus on what is important, while keeping the less important accounts (Local Folders, or Less active Mail accounts ) out of sight.
Again good idea. To make it work for everyone let's make each mailbox configurable, such that all newly created accounts or Local folders will have the "collapsed" attribute by default. Users also to be able to override this by specifying which of the Accounts or Local Folders need to start in Expanded mode on start. You can also have accounts adaptable and remember their "last used" state as well.
