Add Swipe to new tab in android

I like the feature where I can swipe between tabs by swiping on the url bar. But there are often times when I open a new tab and then decide to go back to the tab I was just on. But the new tab page does not support swiping so then it thinks I'm trying to type in my search and I have to hit the back button a couple times. It's an inconvenience and not consistent UI.
