Status: New idea

This is new with the new Thunderbird upgrade, with no option to turn off. Did anyone request this? I, for one, don't need or want this clutter. If some find it useful, I'm happy for them to have the option to display. Give the rest of us the option to not display it, please!

@ZogWith regard to your concern about future consequences of making css changes, I have previously made css changes for another issue, here is my experience as a TB user of 15 years or more:  I need to have lines visible between each email in the UI or my eyes get confused about which item I'm looking at. Those lines disappeared with a some new major version of TB.  I was provided the css code to install lines to my own specifications (weight and color of line), which worked perfectly.  Several versions down the road, my lines disappeared again.  I came here to TB help, posted the css code that was no longer working, and a kind soul posted a slightly different version that was necessary due to overall changes that had been made.  I copied the old css file with a different name just so that I had a backup copy of the old one, then in the active css file deleted the old and pasted in the new code, saved file in Notebook, closed and reopened TB.  Worked again.  So point being, it seems to me that the css code is more likely to be superceded than to become a problem. I know the serious tech folks here are confident in it.  But, I also agree that alterations of UI should be given easy access via menu to turn off/on.  p.s. For anyone who may read this in future, if you have more than one command in the css file, from within Notepad you go to the end of any text, add a paragraph return to separate, then paste in the new code.

For my use case, I only want to see the number of unread emails for inbox folders. Knowing there are 11,064 unread emails in trash and 283 in spam is not helpful and only adds clutter.

Would be great if the unread count badge was configurable at the folder level. Or, at the Folder Mode level (turn on for "Favorite Folders" but off for "Unified Folders", "All Folders", etc.)

I would need a per folder setting (maybe through properties via right-click).

It is extremely distracting for newsletter (filtered) folders.

Thank you, Agentvirtuel, but I will not be doing the hack.  I am just a regular person and am not comfortable doing so.  I've been using Thunderbird ever since Eudora disappeared, and have very much enjoyed Tbird.  My favorite feature is having both my work and home emails open in the same pane, and I can move a message from "home" to my "work" inbox (or other folder) if a friend who is also a colleague sends a message to the wrong email.  I'll be retiring in a few months, and would like to continue using Tbird but will not do so if there is no way to get rid of the ugly (distracting!) new message count bubbles.  I also miss the separation between messages and I hope lines or shading will come back as an option when viewing the list of messages.  Otherwise, I'll be back to using Gmail instead of Third.

One other comment in case you are from (or have contacts from) Thunderbird:  I have been a financial supporter in the past, but this year my donation would not go through without entering my full home address. Not happening! There was no way to make a donation without giving my address, so I had to cancel it.  Very sad.

Another upvote for this - I'm on v115.9 and would LOVE the ability to disable the new message count in the Trash folders. Why would I need to see that? I deleted them for a reason! It takes time to right click "Mark Folder Read" on Trash folder of all my email accounts. It would be a dream come true to disable that new message count in individual folders!

I also find the unread message count, in my unified folder InBox, is wrong, more than right.

I open folder properties, refresh, mark all read, and it still shows the number.

It would be nice to get rid of it.

It would be nice if there was an option to turn these unread numbers off.

I use unified folders and the unread numbers is wrong, more often than right, despite my best efforts (properties -> refresh, mark all as read)

I would prefer it to be via the UI and kept across updates, rather than hacking something.
