Status: New idea

The new feature of leaving the active tab open when you close the group appears to serve no useful function, since it closes anyway as soon as you select another tab. It now takes two clicks to close a group. Please include a config option to disable it and return to the way tab groups worked prior to 142, when closing a tab group ... closed it.

Some of us find this really annoying. I found it so distracting that I've installed the ESR version in parallel to the standard release.

please god make this an option. it's so messy and distracting and like. why would i close the group of a tab i have open if i didn't want to go to another tab.

i also hate the +numbers on the right, please let me do something about that too.

Exactly my thoughts! From pure clean design ... straight into the messy one 😞
Simple option to disable this back to normal would be much appreciate.

ITA! In fact, it looks like a bug and that Firefox tab groups are not working properly. This behavior makes no sense (as outlined in the main post).

This kind of meaningless UI tweaking really erodes FF's reputation since a normal user will not keep on top of all minor changes in a new release. It just looks like a bug.

I don't think it is a feature. For me it looks like a plain bug, since the tab in question collapses as soon as you select any other tab. It works also as expected if no tab from the group is active.

Please repair it and we are good.

They intended it as a feature. It's hard for me to imagine why anybody would want it, but it was intentional.

ITA that it actually comes across looking like a bug. Which decreases the view of overall quality of Firefox. The functionality is puzzling and the rationale for it isn't clear to me at all.

A normal user will not keep on top of all minor changes in a new release and will be surprised to encounter this. It just looks like a bug.

I spent 15 minutes trying to get that 'escaped tab' back into the group.  Make them all hide or make it an option to leave the last one used out.  I would like to see the number of tabs (+3) also hide by default, with  options to show on hover over tab group name or show always.

I agree on also making the number an option -- I have no use for it. I like the idea of showing it on hover. I really hope they change this. I notice that Floorp hides the tab but it's still the focused tab, so they must be using CSS to do it.

I agree with previous comments, If I collapse a tab, it usually means I need my space for another set of tabs I'm already working with or a new session altogether, so it doesn't matter if you kick me to the edge of the last tab, I want to exit that set anyway, not get stuck in the last used tab. I actually don't mind creating a new tab if I collapse the leftmost tab group, that is what I want most of the time, just add a toggle in about:config so we can at least choose how to use tab grouping.

Loosely distinguishable UI between open/closed group within scrollable tab panel. A chance of mistake if I want to click on the tab next to the last tab group. Actually, this is the perfect example of poor UX research and internal feature testing flaw. The feature shouldn't have passed to public release without proper implementation of on/off settings at least. And TBH I wouldn't implement the feature at all, as it doesn't add anything except troubles to the experience.
