Would there be a background daemon that pops up calendar notifications even when Thunderbird closed?

I would find it useful not to start Thunderbird until later in the day and yet ḃe reminded in the case where there is an event in my agenda for which a reminder is set. Said reminder of a reminder would idealy take the form of a notification poping up on my desktop environment.

Hence questions:

1. Does that exist already in one form or another ?

2. In the remote chance that I would feel brave enough and start coding, what would be my entry point ?

Addendum: moments later I stumbled upon FireTray, but it seems to be stuck in 2016. I guess it could be a possible answer to question number 2. I may eventually look inside the .xpi
