Seeking your feedback on Tab Groups

Hi all – I’m Gabriel, on the Firefox team.

We launched Tab Groups half a year ago, and since then we have introduced a number of improvements based on your feedback. You can read more in our starting guide (my personal favorite: previewing tab group contents by hovering). Now that the feature has been in your hands for a while, we would welcome your input on what comes next!

As we explore future enhancements, we are especially interested to hear your perspective on two areas:

  • Improving the usefulness of saved tab groups. How are you using saved tab groups? What benefits do they bring to your workflow compared to bookmarks (and bookmark folders)? How can we improve the experience? For example, we know there is a strong interest in being able to sync tab groups.
  • Workspaces. Some of you have requested a way to separate contexts by creating workspaces – for instance, sets of tabs and tab groups that are entirely isolated from each other, yet remain available within a single browser window. We are eager to learn more about your workspace use cases and where context separation via window management, profiles, and/or containers doesn’t meet your workflow needs. And is collaboration with others an important feature of workspaces for you?

Thanks in advance!

oh one more thing about workspaces: for me creating a new workspace would need to be seamless. When I browse I am normally in my default workspace and as I start noticing "ok this might be a bigger topic" and start opening tabs I just want to throw them into a new workspace. I can still name the workspace later on, but the initial creation of workspaces needs to be fast and a one/two-click affair. I very rarely start out with a new workspace and then start browsing. Normally the "need" for a new workspace emerges as I am browsing.

Those are at least my two cents 😄

* Tab groups: ability to organize in tree structures, ie: nested tab groups (tab groups within tab groups).

* Audio speaker icon on tab that has sound:
   * Annoyingly resizes the tab: appears/disappears. (Especially annoying when you have short sounds happening with a high frequency).
   * Moves all the other tabs too. (Draws your eye unnecessarily to the tabs).
   * Often makes you miss-click on wrong tabs. Or accidentally close a tab.
   * Why not make the tab color change (rather than having the speaker icon appear). Right click, mute tab is good enough.

* Tabs re-centering themselves (sometimes) after clicking on a tab at the edge of the screen (you lose your position when this happens).
   * Tabs should stay in position... I'll re-center if needed.

* Where new tabs are opened in tab groups:
   * When in one tab you click a link with: "open in new tab" -- the new tab goes all the way to the end (rather than right next to the existing tab).

* Ability to [right click] on a tab group and be able to "unload all tabs" (rather than having to select them all and then unloading like that).

Firefox vertical tabs tab groups could be improved in terms of hover/click behavior consistency.

  • Closed group title elements are not clickable on hover. Currently, clicking the hover area does not open the tab group, even though tabs themselves can be selected by clicking their hover area.
  • Opened group title elements do not have a hover selection state. It would be helpful if group titles had the same hover feedback and clickable behavior as regular tabs.

I have liked tabbed groups, however the one feature that I really need, is when I move all tab groups to a separate window, in the window title, it needs to show the tab group, not just what page I'm on.  For instance I have a tab group called "homelab",  When I right click on Firefox in my dock (I'm on a Mac) it shows the page that is open, but I want it to show either the tab group "Homelab", or the tab group and page title "Homelab: Unifi Controller". I am often switching between projects, and hunting down the firefox window where I had all the tabs open for a project takes me way too long.   Keep up the good work!

If a tab group has a tab that is playing audio, video or anything else that triggers a status icon, I think it should also be applied to the tab group to make it easier to find when the group is closed.

Edit: I think the tabs in the list that appears when hovering a closed group should also show the status icons for that tab.

windows, v152.0 - Some recent update removed an old feature that automatically opened web page links in a new tab via right click.  browser.search.openintab = True doesn't work.

I'd like to have new tabs within the group honour the setting "open new tab next to the active one" as opposed to "at the end of the group" (browser.tabs.insertAfterCurrent).

Else that feature works just fine
