When managing a high volume of tabs across multiple windows, the current Tab Groups behavior is erratic and disrupts heavy session triage. This issue directly impacts the exact demographic Tab Groups were developed for, preventing myself and other heavy tab hoarders I know from fully adopting the feature because it still feels incomplete. While these bugs might not appear with light, casual browsing, they create a game-breaking workflow for power users. Imagine trying to clean up a complex file structure, but the system loses your position with every single change you make—you would go crazy.
Specifically, dragging a closed/collapsed tab group between separate windows causes the group to auto-expand at the destination. Moving a large group can also force all other tab groups in the window to expand simultaneously, scrolling the entire view forcefully to the right. It would be incredibly helpful if this could be adjusted so collapsed groups reliably stay collapsed when moved, and to ensure the tab bar doesn't lose its scroll position.
Separate from these behavior fixes, here are some features and workflow changes I suggest implementing to make the system less volatile. While some of these ideas might overlap with features like bookmarks, for many tab hoarders who no longer rely on traditional bookmarking, having these tools native to live tab sessions is crucial:
- Toggleable Open/Close Action: Add a setting to require a double-click to unfold or fold tab groups instead of a single click. Currently, they feel too volatile and open too easily by accident.
- Group Overview Dashboard: With double-click implemented to open/close tab groups, a single click of (or selecting) the closed tab group could display a full-page overview dashboard showing the content/preview of each tab inside that group. Users could quickly search through the specific group from this page and click a thumbnail shortcut to jump straight to that tab.
- Dedicated Drop-Down Button: Add a Tab Groups drop-down menu button on the edge of the tab bar. Clicking it would display a clean list of all groups; selecting a group would open it to the right of the active tab strip, and closing it would cleanly return it to the drop-down menu to help keep the main view beautifully organized.
