I know this is hard to believe, but this is caused by the mouse pointer "selecting" something on the suggestions list. If you move your mouse away from the list so nothing is hovered, then the search works normally. I think if the selection highlight were more boldly colored and not just lightly shaded, this would be more obvious. Still a bit annoying, but at least easier to understand.
