Please do not add AI in the browser as a core feature. If you want to experiment with various ways to use AI, please do it as an optional feature in the form of an addon or similar. Many people use FFX because it is not Edge or Chrome, and that necessitates sth like AI being optional.

Thank you all so much for this thread;
A little bit of hope for the future of Firefox.
Please, Mozilla, listen to us. We need a good browser. No so-called "AI".

The main reason I moved from Mozilla Firefox to Waterfox is because Waterfox has no AI.
The only way to give it the slightest chance is if it's "Disabled by Default" and the the user has to go through a wizard to Enable and CLICK TO USE.
(AI requires user conscious action to be used)
Several IT Security Professionals say the same - Take a look at David Bombal's YouTube Channel.
NO AI ON FIREFOX

I entirely agree. I don't want an agent looking over my shoulder at my screen. Worth watching this video about AI in operating system (which frankly most browsers have almost become). https://media.ccc.de/v/39c3-ai-agent-ai-spy#t=35

This.. while i appreciate Mozilla wanting to ensure AI runs locally for things like translating and summary as well as their plans to let us *choose* the model [or stay local]... the AI should be entirely opt in, or an add on.
sure make it a page during first run setup but but make it opt out

Adding my voice into the choir, because apparently according to Reddit there aren't enough of us. This direction is especially concerning if the AI push is coming from upper management, because the last thing I want to see is Firefox going down the way of Ecosia.
Now, could there be truly ethical AI? I admit that the mention of "AI" by itself now leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but I recognize that it is caused by the scrupulous actors leading the tech world and not of the technology at its core. To not screw up, Firefox either has to build its own LLMs from the ground up with transparent, consent-driven sourcing of its training data and initiatives to support data centers run primarily/entirely by renewable energy. If it cannot go through with such an effort, then it can only host models built by others with the same considerations. The moment it licenses or pays any bottom-barrel entities such as OpenAI is the moment I jump ship.

Glad I saw this, as I've also moved to Waterfox due to the move to AI. It was fun while it lasted.
The nail on the coffin for me was that AI option in the context menu - which had a "disable" inside the context menu itself, that I never even opened. I was looking for it in Settings, you know, where settings tend to stay. Who has ever seen an option to disable a context menu option... in the context menu. Should all options, then, have a "disable this option" next to them in the context menu?
This told me Firefox is going downhill harder than the AI stuff itself.

I AGREE!
I use AI on a regular basis to assist when doing research and diagnosing issues I come across.
I also verify with multiple sources. It really does help, but please don't slop Firefox up like Microslop did with Windows, Edge, and every other product that never should've had AI embedded in it.

From Mozilla's point of view, I see no disadvantage to allowing people to fully disable AI features, because it saves processing time and therefore money.
Also count me among those who feel aggravated every time they see an AI icon; I switched back to Firefox relatively recently after a long time getting frustrated by Safari, Chrome et al and on the whole Firefox is a very comforting browser - everything feels very stable and right now I'm typing into it on a 13-year-old Macbook which has long been abandoned by Apple but is still capable of running the very latest version of Firefox. It's a lovely experience. Don't spoil it by forcing people to use AI.
