I don't hate the Android UI as much as some very vocal members here do, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. Instead of going back to how it was, I'd like to see it improved and made better than is was and better than it is.
In particular, it kinda feels like the customization options were built by someone who doesn't actually use it as their daily driver.
To start with, let's look at the extended toolbar: it's limited to 5 buttons, and only one of them is customizable. That button only has 4 options: Add bookmark, Translate, Homepage, and Back. The first three I rarely use. The last one, Back, is redundant, because I can just swipe from the edge of the screen to use Android's "back" gesture.
What wouldn't be redundant would be a "Forward" button. Why isn't that a choice? If I could swipe for back, and click a button for forward, I'd be all set.
The second button is "Share," another feature I don't use that often.
Find in Page and Bookmarks are both features I use more than Share. I'd love to have buttons for them, and leave "Share" in the overflow menu.
Another fixed button is to show open tabs, which is redundant since swiping on the bar also opens the same screen. (If we can remove that button, its context menu should be added to the "new tab" button instead.)
And why only 5 buttons? Honestly, the toolbar looks silly with only 5 buttons on it: there's very little space above or below each icon, but there's a wide gulf of unused space in between the icons. It feels like an afterthought, tacked on with little concern for aesthetics.
It could easily fit 6 icons, 5 of which are customizable - it'd be more useful *and* look more visually balanced.

Hi, thanks so much for the feedback and for sharing all these ideas! I think you’ve captured our design intention really well.
We’re currently introducing a new design direction, with improvements being added progressively as we continue refining the overall experience. So what you’re seeing today is definitely not the final design, it’s very much a work in progress and part of a broader move toward what we believe will be a much better experience.
And regarding the ideas you shared, we’re absolutely looking into giving people more customization options, so your suggestions align really nicely with the direction we’re heading in. I’ll make sure to share them with the team, and we’ll keep you posted as things evolve.
Again, thanks a ton for taking the time to share these ideas with us, really appreciate the contribution!
