Improve the tab list on Firefox mobile to be easier to use with one thumb

Making moves

As phones are getting longer and bigger, UI elements are getting more spread out, which makes some of them unreachable with just one thumb. Adding an option to move the address bar to the bottom of the screen greatly helps, since that's an easy to reach position in single handed use.

Unfortunately, that's where the conveniences end. Currently, tapping the tab button shows the list with opened tabs in the upper half of the screen and with four or more open tabs, they start at the top of the screen, getting even further out of reach.

Setting the address bar to the bottom of the screen should also move its interactions to the bottom of the screen. It feels counterintuitive to tap a button at the bottom of the screen only to have to reach for elements that are located at the top of the screen.

The tab list also can only be scrolled to display off-screen list items. Making the list scrollable with even just one entry would make it easier to access that item, since it could just be scrolled into an easier to reach position.

In conclusion:

  • Setting the address bar to the bottom should make new tabs in the tab list start appearing on the bottom of the screen
  • The tab list should be scrollable to not only bring tabs into view that are out of view, but also to get tabs into positions that are easier to reach

Thank you for your time and attention.
