It would be great if Thunderbird could offer the ability to undo the sending of an email for a few seconds after the actual sending, similar to what GMAIL does with the "undo send" feature.

This feature has saved my life several times over the past decade. Switching back from Gmail without this kind of feature would be a real step backwards for my sanity :-). Unfortunately, Thunderbird does not even have the ability to apply filters to outgoing messages, so it is not even possible to delay sending all messages as can be done with competing email clients (Outlook, for example).

From a developer perspective, I'm wondering if a mechanism could be found, that is very easy to implement, and that could still address the need. So here is an idea.

Introduce a new preference "remind me to double check the message prior to sending"

If enabled, the behavior of the send button could be changed like this:

  • The send button is disabled (showing we're already in the process of sending).
  • A notification bar is shown at the bottom of the message "Please double check the email before sending", with two buttons "stop, go back", "send now".

The user would have to click again to really send the message.

How about this approach, which would be rather simple to implement, IMHO. Would the following fully solve the request?

  • Introduce a new preference "remind me to double check prior to sending an email"
  • If message send is clicked (or with a keyboard shortcut), disable the regular send action (disable toolbar button)
  • show a notification bar at the bottom "please double check that the message is correct", and two buttons "stop and go back" and "send now". So the user would have to click twice to send.
