Making moves
Status: In development

Thunderbird can move folders to different hierarchies using drag and drop. However, it is not possible to move them within the same hierarchy, i.e. reorder them.

The "Manually sort folders" add-on had helped to sort folders, but with Thunderbird 115 (Supernova), it is no longer available. It is time to make it a proper feature.

I was involved in the development of the add-on to make it Thunderbird 78 compatible and later as a collaborator. So, as an option, I have considered developing another add-on for Thunderbird 115. This may not be impossible. (John is providing a POC.) But I would like to consider implementing the ability to sort folders properly in Thunderbird.

My current thinking and the work required has been described here.

1846550 - add ability to manually sort (order) folders in folder pane (mozilla.org)

It's a shame this is still not implemented, while there seems to be enough time to mess with the UI (in a bad way). With TB 115 the Manually Sort Folders add-on is not working anymore, and I'm back to square one with my issue that the inbox should be opened by default at start. 👎

Manually Sort Folders wasn't the only add-on that v115 broke. And I didn't care for the way the menus were organized at the top. So I too downgraded to v102 and wait until some new add-ons resolve these issues.

there is a "beta" version of Manually Sort Folders, not still present in addon page but you can find it in github https://github.com/protz/Manually-Sort-Folders/issues/199#issuecomment-1751930028

More or less everything works except reordering the subfolders

Please implement this feature as default in Thunderbird. It is incredible that it is not there. Makes life so easy!

I am working here with 200+ folders and subfolders in Thunderbird, so the possibility of structuring and sorting these folders is an absolutely vital requirement. It should definitely be a part of Thunderbird and not of some addon that continuously needs to be reworked with every update.

I am happy that it is possible to color the folders within Thunderbird for a while now - because this used to be another addon I needed to continuously update during the years until it was included in Thunderbird.

15 years and this BASIC feature is STILL not included: ridicules!

Upvote³! Please be sure to implement the functions of the addon that works with a lot of love and magic under v102.* as standard. They are essential, indispensable functions. A terrible accident happened, it updated to v115.* and it was functionally broken, so I thanked all the stars for having a secured backup of my profiles and had to do an unavoidable downgrade to v102. And I can no longer use winget upgrade --all --accept-package-agreements --accept-source-agreements --override --silent because it would upgrade again to accident v115 or greater. v115 is functionally broken.

Removed as spam junk. WTF?

Correct the highlighted errors and try again.

Hello all,

I would absolutely love a feature to "manually sort folders", as different folders require different attention.

I.e., there are some folders which are equally important to the Inbox, namely when you use Filters to organize emails.

E.g., I have a filter to move emails from my Wife to a specific folder called Special. I may want this folder to be right next to the Inbox, as I use it a lot, requiring my full attention, as the emails arrive.

Moreover, by allowing me place the Special folder closer to the Inbox folder - and also closer to the Account Name itself - the user will have to execute smaller mouse movements, which increases efficiency.

Cheers,

It's a real shame that Thunderbird doesn't get going and implement this feature into the software. Hopefully this will happen, otherwise I will have to switch to another software. The number of folders I need are not clearly arranged at the moment. I can't continue working with TB like this!!!!

As a long time user of Manually Sort Folders, I've long wished this was a native Thunderbird feature. Then I wouldn't need to be concerned when Thunderbird updated that I'd find my add-on longer was no longer compatible. Now at version 115.3.1 that has happened. Now is the time to make reordering folders a native feature. But if that can't be done, I'd still settle for a working/compatible update to the add-on.

I'd love to see sorting folders and accounts manually in TB.  That way I can keep the ones that sre significant where I want them to be and not the default alphabetical sort.

I agrree that the ability to sort folders should be a standard part of any email client.

Wieso intergriert Mozilla das nicht in Thunderbird?

Why doesn't Mozilla integrate this into Thunderbird?
