One of Outlook's best features - and the whole point of threads IMHO - is the ability to quickly delete all emails in a thread that you don't actually need (because the text is all in the replies in the latest message).
This tidies up your inbox in an instant and lets you see the wood for the trees instead of a forest of 'me too' replies to group messages.

Any chance of something similar in Thunderbird now threads are pretty stable? Outlooks feature simply moves all the unneeded threads to a folder location (Deleted or other!) and you can protect flagged messages, unread, attachments etc from being 'cleaned'.

Honestly, showing colleagues what happens when you press Ctrl-k in Outlook has often been the highlight of my week. The look of delight on their faces!!!
